Hope Through Healing: Supporting Homeless Women and Children

The Dumas Wesley Community Center is pleased to announce a new partnership between its transitional housing program, the Sybil Smith Family Village, and Joanna Snow Ministries, a mental health counseling practice serving adults, couples, teens, and families. This joint initiative will provide residents with timely access to specialized mental health counseling and life skills classes designed to address the complex challenges associated with trauma, housing instability, and homelessness. Guided by each resident’s goals, preferences, and beliefs, each session will provide consistent support as they work toward stability and self-sufficiency.

"It is truly an honor to be invited into someone’s life and trusted with their story," said Joanna Snow, MA, LPC-S, Founder of Joanna Snow Ministries. "What makes this partnership so meaningful to us is the opportunity to provide consistent care—to keep showing up, to listen, and to walk with women and families through more than just one moment in their lives. Every person deserves to know their story matters and there are people who genuinely care about what happens next. We are incredibly grateful to Dumas Wesley and the Sybil Smith Family Village for trusting Joanna Snow Ministries to be part of their journey."

Community Partners in Action

Students from the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) are making a meaningful difference in Dumas Wesley Community Center’s After School Achievement Program. Through this ongoing partnership, ASMS students provide mentorship and academic support while also creating opportunities for laughter and connection. The collaboration also gives ASMS students valuable opportunities to cultivate their own leadership skills and grow through service to others.

"We have a strong culture of service at ASMS, and Dumas Wesley gives our students an especially meaningful way to serve because they are able to come back regularly and build relationships with the children," said Dr. John Hoyle, President of Alabama School of Mathematics and Science. "Service is an important part of the ASMS experience, but our partnership with Dumas Wesley is about much more than completing service hours. Our students have the opportunity to show up consistently, get to know the children, and become part of a community beyond our campus. That combination of service, relationships, and responsibility reflects a lot of what we hope an ASMS education develops in our students."

Employee Spotlight: Allie Smalling

This month, we are proud to spotlight Youth and Senior Services Director, Allie Smalling, as she celebrates five years of dedicated service at the Dumas Wesley Community Center. Managing the diverse needs of both youth and seniors requires a unique balance of vision, adaptability, and empathy. Allie meets these challenges each day with creativity, compassion, and a genuine commitment to the participants she serves.

Smalling shared, "After nearly 20 years in retail, I wasn't being fulfilled on a deeper level. I didn't know how much I needed Dumas Wesley or how much it would change my life, but God knew it was where I was meant to be. I don’t even consider it 'working.' Instead, it is hanging out with really cool kids and seniors, and giving of myself to people who are so grateful. My heart is full each day, and I am blessed to lead a hardworking team that cares deeply for our participants. Outside of work, I love recharging by spending time with my family and my fur baby Jasmine, going to church, painting, sewing, and creating!"

White-Spunner Realty Gives Back to Dumas Wesley

Earlier this month, the Dumas Wesley Community Center welcomed employees from White-Spunner Realty for a day of service. The volunteers rolled up their sleeves to support seniors in the SAIL Program by leading arts and crafts, serving lunch, and fellowshipping with participants, while also assisting with an organizational project for the Sybil Smith Family Village.

"White-Spunner Realty’s core values inform our company’s desire to include our team in community service days," said Office Manager Chrissy Schneider. "Our team in the SAIL program really enjoyed the opportunity to paint and chat with the seniors while teaming up with colleagues in a completely different context. Those who organized the supply room were gratified to see the immediate, tangible results of their work—something they don’t see every day in the slower process of property management. Our team was also really impressed with the tour of the Sybil Smith Family Village. Thank you for allowing us to volunteer and see firsthand how you're making a difference!"

Empowering Women and Children Experiencing Homelessness

The Baldwin Family Village is a recipient of a grant from the Fairhope Elks Lodge No. 1879 to support women and children experiencing homelessness in Baldwin County.

"At the heart of our organization is a commitment to strengthening our communities, helping our neighbors, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others," said Karla Boyse, Elks Club Manager. "We were honored to support Baldwin Family Village and the families they serve. For a second year in a row, our Lodge was able to provide more than $2,000 in essential items to help meet the everyday needs of their residents. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the important work being done at Baldwin Family Village and to play a small part in helping local families as they work toward stability and a brighter future."

Dumas Wesley Community Center's transitional housing programs are recipients of a grant from First Horizon Bank. Funding will support financial literacy programs for residents at the Sybil Smith Family Village and the Baldwin Family Village. The Villages offer safe housing and comprehensive wrap-around services designed to help women and children move from homelessness to long-term independence.

"Thanks to case management and life skills classes, I got a clear picture of how to fix my credit and build a budget. The classes gave me the tools to make better life choices."
