Community Partner Spotlight
Open Doors Ministries Resale and Thrift Store is a program of the Mobile District United Methodist Church. In 2012, it opened as a Christmas Bizarre at St. Mark United Methodist Church. Today, Open Doors operates two locations in Mobile and has contributed over $500,000 to support local agencies like the Dumas Wesley Community Center.

"The Mobile Community has been a huge part of the Open Doors' success story thanks to their donations, patronage and volunteer support," said Audrey Bryan, Manager of Open Doors Resale and Thrift Store. "Our customers feel good about their shopping experience and for playing a part in helping our community agencies like Dumas Wesley that help those in need," said Bryan.

In November, Dumas Wesley's Board of Directors will be giving back by volunteering at Open Doors. Over the years, Dumas Wesley's staff, participants and board members have enjoyed volunteering as a way to say thank you. (Board members pictured above: Barbara Carroll and Dr. Deborah Bishop)

Open Doors accepts donations during regular store hours and will schedule pick-ups for heavy furniture and/or appliances. Store Business Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Open Doors Resale and Thrift Store is located at 4125 Government Blvd and 6950 Moffett Road. A New Beginning for a Homeless Family
"Ten months ago, I was living in my car with my four year old daughter. We had come upon hard times after losing my job. My daughter would ask me every day, 'When are we going home?'. We stayed in our car for three months. Then, I received a call that we were accepted into Sybil Smith Family Village. They provided us with everything we needed for our apartment, and that was awesome, but safety, structure and peace of mind, is so much better than the physical things. We've now been at Sybil Smith Family Village for seven months. I am employed at a job I love, my daughter is in kindergarten, and I have been attending life skills classes. None of this would be possible without the support of Sybil Smith Family Village, Sybil Smith is changing lives! We really appreciate this opportunity from the bottom of our big hearts!"
--- "Mary," Current Sybil Smith Family Village resident

There are currently 14 families (17 adults and 34 children) residing at Sybil Smith Family Village, Dumas Wesley's transitional housing program. In September, Sybil H. Smith Family Village received 203 housing crisis calls from individuals and families seeking shelter. Learn how you can support families like Mary's here .
Much More than an After School Program
Dumas Wesley's After School Achievement Program (ASAP) is well underway. ASAP provides free tutoring, recreation, hot meals and educational events for
school-age children.

This past month, Dumas Wesley offered a variety of special events including: the Mobile District Attorney's Bully Blocking program; yoga; recycling with Keep Mobile Beautiful; and a health seminar with AIDS Alabama South. In October, children will enjoy arts and crafts with the Junior League of Mobile and learn about theater production and acting with the Joe Jefferson Players, Inc.

The After School Achievement Program operates Monday-Friday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Last year, the program offered over 10,000 hot meals, 636 hours of extracurricular activities, and 318 hours of free tutoring for 227 school age children.
