Do you observe Jolabokaflod?
The Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod (the Christmas book flood) is the annual cycle of people buying books as Christmas gifts for family and friends before encouraging the recipients to start reading their new books after the main evening meal on Christmas Eve. This tradition began during World War II once Iceland had gained its independence from Denmark in 1944. Paper was one of the few commodities not rationed during the war, so Icelanders shared their love of books even more as other types of gifts were short supply. If you love books, consider starting this tradition with your loved ones!

Legislative
Dottie D'Angelo DottieAtlanta@gmail.com
In our illustrious history, GFWC’s legislative strategy and our club women’s advocacy have yielded significant accomplishments:
- We have tirelessly campaigned for ordinances prohibiting the sale of objectionable literature, including materials promoting crime, sex, and horror, especially those accessible to children.
- We have been vocal advocates for equitable access to vaccinations on a global scale.
- We have worked diligently to raise awareness and resources for the preservation of our national parks and the conservation of natural resources.
- We have staunchly advocated for clean water and air in all communities.
We will continue our campaign into 2025!

Cleopatra and the FDA
’Tis the season to haul out our holiday sweaters, taffeta skirts, fancy scarves, and party shoes. With a careful application of lipstick, blush, eyeliner, and a spritz of our favorite perfume, we sail off to DWC’s holiday luncheon, a family gathering, or a New Year’s Eve gala looking and smelling our very best. Haute couture and the cosmetic industry have come a long way over the millennia.
When Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra set sail to greet Marc Antony, she did so with heavily perfumed sails and those iconic blackened eyebrows and flattened eyelashes. Her come-hither scent and allure roped in poor Marc and her public rarely saw their queen without lavish makeup. But while Egyptian eyeliner warded off desert sun, it did have some insidious side effects. Black kohl is lead based.
Cleo’s counterparts across the sea in Rome took a different approach to makeup. Ladies there slathered their faces with deadly fat-based mixtures. All to make the fairer sex glisten. It didn’t fool Roman statesman, Ovid, who preferred a more natural look, and I would give the procedure a resounding Yuk!
The onset of Christianity put cosmetics on the back burner for a few centuries (asceticism and humility were more prized), but “values loosened in cosmopolitan capitals” in Europe in the late 17th century and makeup came roaring back. For both sexes.
Louis XIV of France popularized wigs and white face. Both men and women applied a manure-based whitening mixture to their faces. Looked great in portraits of the Sun King and his family painted by the likes of Hyacinthe Rigaud. But the mixture also “inflamed eyes, weakened tooth enamel, and caused hair loss in the heaviest users.” Definitely another Yuk! When Parisians sent Marie Antoinette to Lady Guillotine, all that went away … for a century or two anyway.
Then came the modern age of manufacturing, advertising, and Hollywood. And Mabel Williams, who “singed the hair off her eyebrows and lashes in a 1915 kitchen fire.” To remedy her plight, Mabel used a trick she had read about in Photoplay. She mixed burnt cork ash with coal dust and Vaseline, and reconstructed those singed eyebrows. Her brother, Tom Lyle Williams, a movie buff, was inspired by his sister and a billion-dollar business was born. Enter Maybelline.
While I’m cautiously wary of government’s reach, the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 may just be the most significant expansion of the FDA’s authority to regulate cosmetics since its enactment in 1938. The new law goes a long way to ensuring the safety of cosmetic products (their chemical components, impact on our health, product labeling, and advertising) we use in abundance daily. I’m pretty sure Cleopatra would agree.
