Dear Buckeye,
We are writing to share that federal immigration rule changes have been announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that will affect international students and visiting scholars in the United States. As you may recall, last October we sent you a message about the DHS proposed rule that would eliminate “duration of status,” which has allowed those on F or J visas to remain in the United States as long as necessary to complete their academic program, practical training or research activity provided they continue to meet all immigration requirements.
The Office of Legal Affairs, Government Affairs and International Affairs, along with other units across campus, are closely reviewing the new rule, which was issued on July 17 and is set to be implemented effective September 15, 2026.
We understand that regulatory changes can raise questions and uncertainty. Please know that Ohio State is reviewing the changes and assessing potential impacts to members of our international community. We will be in touch with information and guidance once our review is complete.
Please know you are a valued and important part of our Buckeye community, and we remain committed to supporting you. Your presence on campus contributes greatly to enhancing the Ohio State experience for all students, faculty and staff.
As always, Ohio State is committed to providing you with valuable resources to ensure your well-being. Should you need assistance or emotional support, students can reach out to the Office of Student Life’s Counseling and Consultation Service and staff and faculty may connect with the Employee Assistance Program through the Office of Human Resources. And you may always contact our immigration specialists at iss@osu.edu. They will do their absolute best to support you.
Updates will be provided to you and published to our Duration of Status webpage on this important issue as we learn more about the implications of the new rule.
Sincerely,
Kaya Şahin, PhD
