Farming the Future of Dairy

Tradition and technology work side by side at West Port Dairy Co. Now in its fifth generation, the dairy farm on the edge of north Durham blends long-standing farming knowledge with new approaches.

From robotic milkers and high-tech milk cooling systems to cows resting on waterbeds, new practices help support farm operations and build its resilience. The family-run operation is also driven by an interest in on-farm processing and diversification, and they have embraced social media by showcasing everyday life on the farm.

Algoma Orchards: Local Food Champion

Algoma Orchards in Newcastle was recognized by the Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance as a Local Food Champion. The program showcases the people, farms and food businesses that support Ontario’s agri-food sector.

Algoma was recognized for its innovation, sustainability and strategic growth. From adopting advanced horticultural technology and reducing its environmental footprint to creating opportunities for the next generation, Algoma has grown from a small mixed family farm into Canada’s largest apple producer and processor.

Access Youth Jobs Program Funding

Agriculture and agri-food related employers have until May 4 to apply for federal funding to help hire young workers. The Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) supports young people aged 15 to 30 in gaining hands-on experience in the sector by providing non-repayable contributions towards youth wages and benefits. Additional incentives are available for employers who hire young people facing barriers to employment, including Indigenous youth and young people living with disabilities.

In March, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced up to $27 million over two years for the program. Since 2019, YESP has supported over 6,200 youth jobs across Canada’s agriculture sector.
