10% Campaign
| The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10 percent of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend 35 billion dollars on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over 3.5 billion dollars into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com

Yesterday, as I was driving on 147, I saw billowing, yellow clouds of pollen coming from the swaying pines. The pine pollen may be out earlier than usual, but so is the ASPARAGUS!! Asparagus usually starts showing up at Market around the first week of April. But the warm weather has pushed it up out of the ground early and with a vengeance! Last week, several farmers had a few bunches of it and this week, according to one farmer that I talked to, there will be A LOT more this weekend! Also, I heard through the grapevine that the first strawberries of the season aren't too far off! I was lucky enough to get my hands on some of the asparagus at Market last weekend. If you have every wondered how to cook asparagus. Here is a simple, delicious way to cook it. Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Trim the ends of the asparagus. Leave them as a whole spear. Coat with 1-2 TB of olive oil. Lay them evenly on a cookie pan. Sprinkle with salt & pepper. Bake for 5-7 minutes, until they are just barely tender. Along with the early asparagus, our greenhouse tomato growers are harvesting their tomatoes earlier than usual this year. Here is a recipe that I came up with last April, when I came home with lots of asparagus and tomatoes... * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Congratulations to Sandy Pleasant from Sunset Ridge Buffalo Farm for winning our Chili Challenge last weekend with her bison chili!! She really lived up to her "chili queen" title! Way to go, Sandy!! And thanks to everyone who came out to taste and vote for your favorite chili! I know that I promised to feature the winning chili recipe in the newsletter, but I've been out sick all week and I didn't get a chance to get a copy before writing this. So, look for it in next week's newsletter. We will also have more copies of other chili recipes at Market tomorrow. So, if you'd like to pick up a copy, just stop by the Market info table.
See you at the Market!

We're betting that won't happen this year...

Stoney Mountain Farm
We'll look forward to seeing you at the market this Saturday!
Lamb: We'll be there with more of our fabulous Navajo Churro lamb. At Stoney Mtn Farm we're Raising Navajo Churro's, an Heirloom Breed of sheep Recognized by SLOW FOOD as a "flavor worth saving!" On the endangered list, why? Our sheep grow slow, that doesn't work well in most large farm operations. Born and raised here...they aren't processed until 12-18 months of age and the flavor nor texture are compromised. Because they are slow growing and small the flavor maintains lamb like qualities...ask our many fans.
Olga's Eco Friendly Wool Dryer Balls: Put an end to those chemical laden dryer sheets and softeners....1 pack of our Eco-Friendly Dryer Balls will soften, reduce static...and reduce drying time....100% money back guarantee! Great Gift Idea! Come see firsthand what our 12,000+ fans on Facebook are raving about!
New to our product line...earth friendly garden mulch. Keeps weeds out, breaks down as fertilizer, and last but far from least...retains water for slow release to your plants.
Wool Pin Cushions~Wool Cat Toys~Wool BATTS
Crafters/Quilters/pillow stuffer come and get them well they last. Also limited supply of rovings and yarns in an array of natural shades of color produced by our sheep.
Hope to See you there!

Terra Clotha
The waiter looked up at the two officers. It was going to be a long day of looking at mug shots. "Now this first group," the taller officer was saying. "is people who say they were eating in the restaurant at the time of the murder. If you recognize someone as a customer, we can let them go. If not, then that may be our suspect." The waiter took the first picture warily. "I recognize this guy," he said. "He was a customer. I know because he was wearing one of those hand-dyed T-shirts you can get at the Durham Farmers' Market. It had a picture of a rocket ship pushed into the face of the Man in the Moon. He said it was an homage to Georges Mlis, the French silent movie director. That was the Ben Kingsley character in the movie Hugo, by the way. I'd recognize that shirt anywhere." "Okay, good," the shorter officer said, pointing to another picture. "Now this next one..."
Hand-dyed T-shirts from Terra Clotha. They may not help you beat a murder rap, but they're sure to get you recognized. AND SPEAKING OF WARM WEATHER...we're bringing out our warm-weather clothes a little early this year, and for a few weeks, we'll have both long-sleeved and short-sleeved clothing available.
