The Recollective Community Partner Booth
Happy Earth Month! Come find ReCo at their community partner table to get your bag collection kit and find out what they have going on this month!
About this DFM Sponsor:
The ReCollective collects hard-to-recyle items (the stuff that can't go in your curbisde bin) that would otherwise be landfill-bound right from your doorstep, and ensure they are reused or recycled in transparent and responsible ways. They can help you eliminate clutter from your home, and they do the leg work for you, so that common household materials make it to a new life, rather than a landfill!

We are grateful for The ReCo's support of the market, and hope that you will stop by to say hi and find out more about their services and earth-care passion!

If you glanced over at our booth on a typical market Saturday morning, you may have casually remarked something like, βOh, look at the tie-dyed shirts.β We appreciate that. But hereβs a little secret: Our shirts are only very rarely tie-dyed. Oh, theyβre dyed, of course. But we very rarely tie. Instead, we get our color variations by manipulating the dye chemistry and crumpling up the garments as we toss them into a dye bath. Not the same thing as tie-dyeing at all. (However, you are welcome to continue to refer to them as βtie-dyed,β and we wonβt complain.) Most of the time, we decorate our shirts with silkscreened designs, appliques, or a batik process. But recently, we have been selling our shirts naked, which is to say, they donβt have a design on them; we let the color speak for itself. Not all colors are available in all sizes. You have to let the right shirt find you. We hope you enjoy.
T-shirts from Terra Clotha. Dyed. But rarely tied.

Honey bees, like drunks, sometimes donβt return to the right door. Their ability to orient is quite good and they have no problem in nature where colonies are usually a half mile or more apart. We mess them up. We may put as many as forty to a hundred colonies in one small area and this generates a phenomenon called drifting. In a modest sized apiary, as many as 30% of the workers may reside in a hive not their own. Drones are even greater wanderers, virgin queens returning from mating flights do best, but beekeepers raising queens have an irreducible 25% loss of virgin queens from various causes, drifting to hives where they are unwelcome being one.
Other problems this can cause beekeepers are dispersal of parasitic varroa mites and uneven populations in the hives which can cause the fat ones to swarm and make no honey and the depleted ones to make no honey for lack of a large population. This can be visible if say twenty hives are set in a line in a windy field β the hives on the ends of the row will be tall, the center hives low.
ο»Ώ
A more extreme situation can occur in the CA almond orchards where bees are brought in on semi trucks, four on a pallet unloaded by forklifts. Hasty haulers may stack the pallets three high on the ground and leave them so for several days. Thee result will be very weak hives on the bottom tier, blockbusters on the top. The hives are subsequently graded by the farmerβs agent and the result can be a serious loss of income for the beekeeper as he is not rewarded for the strong ones but docked for the weak ones. Eventually the hives are spread about and all is well from the point of view of the almond trees.

Hello from Lil' Farm. At market this week we will have kale, collards, chard, scallions, napa cabbage, salanova lettuce, red mustard and more.
And...
Itβs time to sign up for our 2023 CSA! Join us for a fresh, colorful, nutritious future bounty.
What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings.
The CSA will run April 12th through July 26th (16 weeks). Like last year, we are offering a Home Delivery option and 2 pick up sites in Durham (West Durham and South Durham). Go to our website to see pricing and learn more- www.lilfarm.com. We would love to have you! Please share the info with anyone who would be interested.
Thank you and take care,
Lily and George

About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. We have a full service cafΓ©, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Located in the heart of downtown Durham, NC, Loaf focuses on hearth baked sourdough breads and pastries. What started out of a backyard brick oven, as a hobby to share with friends and neighbors, very quickly grew to a stall at the Downtown Durham Farmers Market, and settled as a brick and mortar shop in 2011. Throughout the years Loaf has expanded it's offerings, and partnered with local growers, and makers to provide you with as many seasonal treats from right here in the NC Triangle.

This week we highlight our pesticide-free greens -- lots of tender salad bowl lettuce mix, collards, chard, kale, kalettes and greens, green garlic, green onions and jam. Early risers will see a limited amount of our pesticide-free strawberries. We will bring more plant starts for your home gardens including spinach, chard, kale, sugar snap peas and herbs -- sage, garlic chives, regular chives, cilantro, flat leaf and curly parsley, lavender, thyme, and oregano. Hopefully we've seen the last of the frosty mornings, so we'll bring peppers, eggplant, and some tomatoes. It's helpful to bring your boxes or containers to transport them home. As always, you can recycle your 8 ounce glass jam jars and metal rings with us. Thank you!

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.

Botanist & Barrel crafts real southern ciders, sours, and dry fruit wines. We are the South's only natural cidery focused on spontaneous and wild cultures. We craft healthy adult lifestyle beverages for every occasion. We support our local farmers using local sustainably and organically sourced fruits, including blueberries, apples and more from our no spray estate farm. Only tree ripened apples are used in our ciders with a focus on traditional southern heritage cider apples. All of our ciders and wines contain little to no residual sugar and are low calorie. As an experimental winery we have almost no rules with the exceptions being we never fine, filter or pasteurize any of our ciders or wines.

Hello Durham Family! Help us welcome Sue to the Market! She is the lovely daughter of one of our own cheese makers. She will be able to help you find our variety flavors and products. Including this month's theme of heart shaped chevre.
We have a selection of goats milk items handcrafted with love in Siler City, NC! At our booth you'll find a rainbow of flavors displaying our spreadable cheeses, nestled in among our pure chevrè, aged bloomy rind cheeses, yogurts, gelato, fudge, and even soaps. As NC's pioneer farmstead goat dairy, we've been treating all our goats like celebrities since 1991, and strive to do the same for our customers! Help us limit contact and keep each other safe during market transactions by placing pre-orders through our website, https://celebritydairy.com/preorder!
