The Recollective Community Partner Booth
Come visit the folks at the ReCo table this Saturday from 10-12, and receive a free bag collection kit when you sign up with them!
About this DFM Sponsor:
The ReCollective collects hard-to-recyle items (the stuff that can't go in your curbisde bin) that would otherwise be landfill-bound right from your doorstep, and ensure they are reused or recycled in transparent and responsible ways. They can help you eliminate clutter from your home, and they do the leg work for you, so that common household materials make it to a new life, rather than a landfill!
We are grateful for The ReCo's support of the market, and hope that you will stop by to say hi and find out more about their services and earth-care passion!

Flat River Farm and Nursery | |
Since the 1700s, the Holeman family have raised their children and made a living on this 40 acre farm. Today, Charles and Joan Holeman grow greenhouse and field tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables as well as strawberries, cut flowers and a variety of live plants including ferns, bougainvilleas, bedding plants, pansies, and mums.
Greenhouse tomatoes are grown pesticide-free with bumblebees for pollination and other beneficial insects for pest control. Greenhouses are heated with a hot water system using recycled wood for heat. All field production is on raised plastic covered beds with drip irrigation. Cover crops follow all crops, which are on a three year rotation. When pests become a significant problem, softer controls (organic, fungus, and bacteria) are used first and approved chemicals are a last resort.–

Hello from Lil' Farm. At market this week we will have kale, collards, chard, scallions, napa cabbage, salanova lettuce, red mustard and more.
And...
It’s time to sign up for our 2023 CSA! Join us for a fresh, colorful, nutritious future bounty.
What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings.
The CSA will run April 12th through July 26th (16 weeks). Like last year, we are offering a Home Delivery option and 2 pick up sites in Durham (West Durham and South Durham). Go to our website to see pricing and learn more- www.lilfarm.com. We would love to have you! Please share the info with anyone who would be interested.
Thank you and take care,
Lily and George

This Week: Whole Wheat Levain; Country Loaves; Hot Cross Buns
About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. Helmed by baker Ari Berenbaum
since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We give back to the community via our Bakery- and donor-supported Durham Neighbors program, an in-house experiment in Universal Basic Income whereby we Cashapp 100+ low-income local families every month $50 which goes to much-needed groceries, utility bills, or diapers. We are psyched to be now an official member of the Durham Farmer’s Market, joining an illustrious crew of artisans and purveyors who are dedicated to local, independent, small business, and Southern gastronomical culture. We continue to organically fertilize and water the strawberries on a regular basis now. Remember, this crop is certified organic.. a difficult task especially for fruit. There is a lot of "pampering" that has to be done with the berry crop... covers on and off... irrigating, etc. The asparagus (2 acre field) is just beginning to pop through the soil.
The greens are coming along great in the solar-powered high tunnel. Mario has them packed with wonderful organic vegetables for you... fennel, lettuce, chard, kale, and more.
Many of you have asked for a VISIT to our farm, so mark your calendar for Sunday, May 14th from 10:00 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m.! Yes, this is Mother's Day and the perfect time to get out in the country for farm visits. We will offer a walk around the farmhouse and Century old barns, describing the old commisonary and wellhouse, hen house, smoke house, Mule barn, Seed barn, and more. You will be able to drive down the road to the greenhouse and organic vegetable fields. Bring your cooler and stock up on organic ripe strawberries and asparagus along with meats.
'Brats on a bun" will be served for lunch if you like to eat lunch on the premises. We will be one stop on the "Women in Ag: Local Foods Tour" this day... so plan to visit other farms in Franklin County also on May 14th. Details coming... There is no charge to participate in the tour and visit the eight farms on the tour.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday. THANK YOU for your continued support of our Century-old, woman owned and operated Family Farm!

Yes, it’s still a little cold on some mornings. But it’s not too early to think about dresses. These children’s dresses come in great colors and have the ability to wear like iron. They’re dressy enough to wear to a fancy restaurant, and comfortable enough to wear on the playground. We’ve had some parents who tell us their child would wear their dress every day if allowed – even after it was chewed on by a gerbil. (And by the way, we have experience fixing gerbil holes. Just ask us.) Finally, we’ve had some parents who buy a dress in a size slightly larger than they normally would get. What starts out as a long dress for a 4-year-old becomes a short dress by the time they’re ready to buy a new one three or four years later.

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.

This week more spring produce: scallions, garlic scallions, mixed lettuce, and escaroles.
For flowers there will be more amazing ranunculus, plenty of mixed bouquets, anemones, daffodils and the last of the tulips.
We will also bring the first of our spring bedding plants. Tomatoes, nasturiums, herbs, and a few native flowers. Enjoy getting your hands in the dirt, but watch for late frost!
All our produce, flowers and plants are certified naturally grown for healthful foods from healthy fields!
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hello Durham Family! Help us welcome Sue to the Market! She is the lovely daughter of one of our own cheese makers. She will be able to help you find our variety flavors and products. Including this month's theme of heart shaped chevre.
We have a selection of goats milk items handcrafted with love in Siler City, NC! At our booth you'll find a rainbow of flavors displaying our spreadable cheeses, nestled in among our pure chevrè, aged bloomy rind cheeses, yogurts, gelato, fudge, and even soaps. As NC's pioneer farmstead goat dairy, we've been treating all our goats like celebrities since 1991, and strive to do the same for our customers! Help us limit contact and keep each other safe during market transactions by placing pre-orders through our website, https://celebritydairy.com/preorder!
