We seem to be dealing with a bit of in-between weather: warm and chilly, plus our usual dose of pollen. As a result, there's a lot of sniffles. Whenever I feel a bit like my immune system is acting up, I have a kimchi-based broth to help clear my sinuses. It's not the prettiest sight, but it works for me. Here's a plant based version if you'd like to try it yourself:

Roberson Creek Farm brings farm fresh eggs and fresh, seasonal produce to the Durham Farmers’ Market every Saturday.

2 Million hives of bees will be leaving CA this month, returning to almost every other state, but particularly the northern MW. They were moved into CA to pollinate almonds in February, the rentals paid to beekeepers amounting to more than $200 per hive. Bees are no longer dwindling away, even though 40% of hives die out each year, because the pollination money supports dividing colonies into new hives. Honey as a commodity is now underpriced because of international adulteration and no longer supports commercial beekeeping.
Pollination is essential for a good almond crop. They bloom so early that native bees aren’t awake yet and only the overwintered colonies of honeybees can do the job. Almond orchards are worth $30,000 an acre, can produce a ton of almonds at $6/lb (mostly exported to China) and the crop is valued at $11 billion. The downside is the water it takes to do this. It is not Colorado River water but water from dams on the rivers coming from the Sierras and when that fails, as it has been, groundwater from shrinking aquifers. Residential wells in almond areas are going dry to the distress of homeowners. One searches for cheery news . . .

Hello from Lil' Farm. At market this week we will have kale, collards, chard, scallions, napa cabbage, salanova lettuce, red mustard and more.
And...
It’s time to sign up for our 2023 CSA! Join us for a fresh, colorful, nutritious future bounty.
What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings.
The CSA will run April 12th through July 26th (16 weeks). Like last year, we are offering a Home Delivery option and 2 pick up sites in Durham (West Durham and South Durham). Go to our website to see pricing and learn more- www.lilfarm.com. We would love to have you! Please share the info with anyone who would be interested.
Thank you and take care,
Lily and George

This Week: Whole Wheat Levain; Country Loaves; Hot Cross Buns
About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. Helmed by baker Ari Berenbaum
since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We give back to the community via our Bakery- and donor-supported Durham Neighbors program, an in-house experiment in Universal Basic Income whereby we Cashapp 100+ low-income local families every month $50 which goes to much-needed groceries, utility bills, or diapers. We are psyched to be now an official member of the Durham Farmer’s Market, joining an illustrious crew of artisans and purveyors who are dedicated to local, independent, small business, and Southern gastronomical culture. You can follow us at Instagram.com/ninthstreetbakery or read Ari’s musings on bread and Durham at blog.ninthstbakery.com.

We continue to organically fertilize and water the strawberries on a regular basis now. Remember, this crop is certified organic.. a difficult task especially for fruit. The greens are coming along great in the solar-powered high tunnel. Mario has them packed with wonderful organic vegetables for you... fennel, lettuce, chard, kale, and more.

You will be able to drive down the road to the greenhouse and organic vegetable fields. Bring your cooler and stock up on organic ripe strawberries and asparagus along with meats.
'Brats on a bun" will be served for lunch if you like to eat lunch on the premises. We will be one stop on the "Women in Ag: Local Foods Tour" this day... so plan to visit other farms in Franklin County also on May 14th. Details coming... There is no charge to participate in the tour and visit the eight farms on the tour.

FARMHOUSE CHEESE: Hickory Grove, Carolina Moon, Dairyland Farmers’ Cheese, Hot Farmers, Dill Farmers, a few New Moon, and Calvander are available. Add Farmers' to eggs with herbs or to any Mexican dish; it is tangy and melts well. Carolina Moon is firm and fresh tasting when young and has richer flavor and a creamy texture when it's more aged. It's best at room temperature with a crusty baguette or crackers.
PASTURED BEEF: Our beef is known for its flavor and we have Ground Beef on special at 2 packs for $13.00. Make a great cheeseburger with our Hickory Grove cheese. Beef kielbasa is also available to enjoy like a hot dog or to have with sauteed greens, cabbage, or a rice dish. It is smoked and has a little pork added for extra flavor.
WHEY FED PORK: Pork Chops are available in a thick or thin cut, and our customers love them. Butt Roasts, plenty of sausages, Bacon, ground pork, Spare Ribs, and Smoked Ham hocks are also available. Sausages are made in seven flavors, mild or spicy, and they include the hams for extra meatiness. Try our breakfast sausage in a bulk pack or the sage and maple in links to serve for breakfast this weekend.

This week more spring produce: scallions, garlic scallions, mixed lettuce, and escaroles.
For flowers there will be more amazing ranunculus, anemones, daffodils and plenty of mixed bouquets.
We will also bring the first of our spring bedding plants. Tomatoes, nasturiums, herbs, and a few native flowers. Enjoy getting your hands in the dirt, but watch for late frost!
All our produce, flowers and plants are certified naturally grown for healthful foods from healthy fields!
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hello Durham Family! Help us welcome Sue to the Market! She is the lovely daughter of one of our own cheese makers. She will be able to help you find our variety flavors and products. Including this month's theme of heart shaped chevre.
We have a selection of goats milk items handcrafted with love in Siler City, NC! At our booth you'll find a rainbow of flavors displaying our spreadable cheeses, nestled in among our pure chevrè, aged bloomy rind cheeses, yogurts, gelato, fudge, and even soaps. As NC's pioneer farmstead goat dairy, we've been treating all our goats like celebrities since 1991, and strive to do the same for our customers! Help us limit contact and keep each other safe during market transactions by placing pre-orders through our website, https://celebritydairy.com/preorder!
Theme of the Month February: Fresh Heart Shaped Chevre
Lots of love from your cheese-makers,
Elizabeth, Monica, Ina & the Goats
