Botanist & Barrel
Botanist & Barrel crafts real southern ciders, sours, and dry fruit wines. We are the Souths only natural cidery focused on spontaneous and wild cultures. We craft healthy adult lifestyle beverages for any occasion. We support our local farmers using local sustainably and organically sourced fruits, including blueberries, apples and more from our no spray estate farm. Only tree ripened apples are used in our ciders with a focus on traditional southern heritage cider apples.

All of our ciders and wines contain little to no residual sugar and are low calorie. As an experimental winery we have almost no rules with the exceptions being we never add additives like sulfites and we do not fine, filter or pasteurize any of our ciders or wines.

Fruchtenicht Honey
An unpleasant feature of having bee outyards is the presence of ticks and chiggers. There is usually some grass that got a little too tall or some bushes and the beekeeper is often immobile for periods of time allowing these jolly animalicules to come on board.

We have four species of ticks in NC but in this area the lone star tick (white splotch on the thorax of the adult) predominates. Ticks have three recognizable phases in their life history: the larval stage about the size of specks of pepper, the nymph stage about 1/16 inch in diameter, and the adult about 1/4 inch long. If you have the misfortune of standing in a cluster of newly hatched larvae, you can get a hundred or so of the little demons on your leg and tiny though they be you will notice every bite. Scrub them off with alcohol.

The nymphs, often called deer ticks locally, are the likeliest to get you. Fortunately one often tends to feel the adults crawling before they have a chance to bite. If you find a tick attached to you, remove it as quickly as possible with sharp-pointed tweezers. Forget about burnt match ends and oil. If taken off within 24 hours, you will usually avoid the many diseases they can transmit. If you have been bitten by a tick and, say, two weeks later you experience headaches and joint pain, get a Covid test. If negative, suspect one of the tick borne diseases.

What’s the defense? First, stay out of tall grass during high tick season, March to July. Tick populations fluctuate from year to year, this being a good year.
I draw my socks up over my pant cuffs and spray my boots and cuffs with DEET. Personally, I haven’t had luck with Resmethrin. Dusting with garden sulfur in an old sock can also help. When you get home, put your clothes in the dryer for ten minutes. Dry heat kills them, a hot wash won’t. Take a shower immediately and look yourself over in front of a mirror. All the above will help with chiggers also.
Chiggers are almost microscopic. They drill a hole in you, insert enzymes that retard healing, and suck up the lymph that fills their little personal watering hole. Recently, I’m preferring cortisone cream to nail polish to ease the itching. Chigger bites can irritate for three weeks, tick bites for a month. Avoid them. Aint nature grand.

Ninth Street Bakery
This Week: Whole Wheat Levain; Country Loaves; Hot Cross Buns

About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. Helmed by baker Ari Berenbaum since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We give back to the community via our Bakery- and donor-supported Durham Neighbors program, an in-house experiment in Universal Basic Income whereby we Cashapp 100+ low-income local families every month $50 which goes to much-needed groceries, utility bills, or diapers. We are psyched to be now an official member of the Durham Farmer’s Market, joining an illustrious crew of artisans and purveyors who are dedicated to local, independent, small business, and Southern gastronomical culture. Piedmont Microgreens
Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.

We are a family owned and operated business based out of East Durham, with a passion for our community. Short Winter Soups
Short Winter Soups makes inspired, high-integrity vegetarian soups using NC-grown produce. Each week, we bring a variety of ready-to-eat and frozen soups by the pint. Preordering is available until 3:30pm on Fridays at and is recommended for any of the ready-to-eat soups (as they are always the first to sell out).

Here's our menu for tomorrow.

Ready to eat, by the pint:

Frozen, by the pint:

Frozen broth, by the quart:

These days, I'm looking for dinners that come together in less than 30 minutes and don't heat up the kitchen with the oven on. There are lots of nice soups on our menu for Saturday, and we'll be sampling several of them too. Two great meals recently I've made with the COCONUT LIME BROTH are:
  • soup: I heated up the broth, threw in a can of chickpeas and did a quick sauté peppers, cherry tomatoes, and basil from the market.
  • rice bowl: I use the broth (instead of water) as the liquid for cooking brown rice. Then it's a choose-your-own adventure to pile on the vegetables, protein and garnishes.

We are set up on Foster St. Thanks for letting us cook for you!

Wild Scallions
August has begun and so has the orchard harvest! This week we will have some very tasty heirloom seckel pears and the start of the asian pears and southern heirloom apples. After watching the orchard grow for the last ten years, it is a little magical to see many of the trees full of fruit this year!

Plenty of summer goodness from the fields this week too: field tomatoes, cherry tomato pints, peppers, eggplant, okra, garlic, scallions, bitter gourd, cucumber and more nice sweet crunchy Korean melons.
Also look for an abundance of blooms: dahlias, zinnias, marigold, lisianthus and plenty of mixed bouquets.

All our produce, flowers and plants are certified naturally grown for healthful foods from healthy fields!

Looking forward to seeing everyone!
