Piedmont Microgreens

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.

         ** FARM NEWS:

Last weekend's weather really did a number on the vegetables.. inside the high tunnel greenhouse and out in the field.. both were covered with row covers. When the temperature gets to 6 degrees, it is difficult for any crop to survive.  Mario is surveying the damages as the temperature slowly increases.    Luckily, he worked hard transplanting some of the smaller, less mature vegetables that were outside ... moving them inside the tunnels.. before the big freeze.  However, it was COLD everywhere.

PECANS... many finally dropped to the ground during the windy weather last Friday.  We are thankful a portion of the trees bore fruit this year.  Mario and I spent several afternoons hand harvesting pecans and we delivered the first large batch to the sheller. Many of you have been asking for our shelled pecans... and we hope to have them at the DFM next weekend.  They are great frozen to use for your baking needs or slow roasted... nothing better than fresh pecans.   I am also THANKFUL my late grandmother, "Mamie", planted these large trees lining the driveway, where the word "LANE" comes from in our farm's name, over 85 years ago!

Many of the lambs and kids decided to be born in the cold weather.. so we had to bring them inside the heated barn room... to dry them off and make sure they had colostrum... before returning to their mothers. Mario also rounded up all of the newborns and mothers every afternoon and made sure they could come inside the big barn and bed down in hay to stay dry and warmer in the night. This past week has been a trying time to be a farmer of both livestock and vegetables.

We are very proud that our farm's cattle have recently been 'Certified Global Animal Partner' (GAP Stage #4) and Animal Welfare Certified... with a national certification which included intensive inspections and audits. Also, all calves are easily tracked with electronic tagging.. from birth to harvest.  A genetic profile of the cattle herd was completed by the American Angus Association with our stocker calves ranking high for carcass traits... potentially grading a Choice or Prime carcass. I am thankful my father and grandfather were visionaries in selecting the best beef cattle out there... starting in 1911!  Now, I just need to keep the farm growing and producing outstanding Angus BEEF for you, our valued customers.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday. We are all hoping for better weather.

About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
