Ready Set Future:

A PLACE (People, Location, Acceleration, Creativity, Enablers) Blueprint for Durham

The Region of Durham's Economic Development and Tourism's 30-year vision: Durham’s distinct cultural identity—and its vibrant and diverse downtowns—will be magnets for talent and investment, and the region’s innovation community will be known for solving global challenges. Ready Set Future is the new Economic Development and Tourism (Invest Durham) strategic plan developed collaboratively with partners from the academic, business, arts and public sectors, local area municipalities and innovation community.

With the guidance of a steering committee, economic data and global drivers of change were analyzed and aspirations were developed to frame a long-term vision for the future—a talented workforce, vibrant downtowns, a reputation for business innovation and a distinct creative identity. A Five-Year Action Plan, found in the second half of the strategy, is the road map for the next five years. These actions will guide Durham Region confidently down the path to begin realizing these 30-year aspirations.

Durham Region 2023 Ontario Parasport Games

We did it! Thank you to all the sport tourism stakeholders and partners who played a part in helping us host a successful Ontario Parasport Games in February!

Whether you were a host hotel providing participants with a place to lay their heads at the end of a long journey or after a day of competition, a local restaurant or caterer keeping athletes fueled with healthy meals, a sport venue operator providing superior field of play conditions, a coffee shop serving up hot drinks to athletes and fans, one of nearly 60 Games partners whose support helped us to deliver the best Games yet, one of our over 200 Games volunteers or a cheering fan, we cannot thank you enough!

Over the Games weekend, we welcomed nearly 500 participants, of which about 300 were athletes, as well as visiting family and friends. We hosted an opening night dinner, a spectacular opening ceremony, 11 sport competitions and four sport demonstration and try-it sessions.

But we didn’t stop there. We launched partnerships that grew awareness and support for accessibility, inclusion, and parasport in our community:

  • AccessNow mapping of our Games venues and all municipal facilities.
  • A pilot training program for accessible sport athletes.
  • Sensory support kits at our libraries and Games venues.
  • A pilot program to add more adaptive sport and recreational opportunities at Durham College and Ontario Tech University.
  • An inclusive Athlete’s Lounge where participants gathered between competitions.
  • Collection of donations in support of Feed the Need in Durham.

We’re so proud of how our community came together to host these Games for a second time. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners on legacy initiatives that will continue to grow awareness and support for accessibility, inclusion, and parasport in our community for years to come.

Central Counties Tourism Partnership Program

Central Counties Tourism (CCT) has released its new Partnership Opportunities Program!

Tourism is about getting people to spend money in a community where they neither work nor live. To be good at it, many businesses have to provide exceptional experiences that motivate people to visit and, more importantly, ensure they return and tell their friends to visit.

We can’t grow the visitor economy in a bubble. To that end, CCT is challenging every organization entering into a partnership to determine how they will work with others to encourage increased length of visit and money spent.

The deadline for the first intake period for the partnership program is March 24 for projects beginning April 1 to May 31, 2023.

Learn more about the partnership program.
