A Note from our CEO

Summer is often the time of year we think of travel, vacations, beaches, and time with family. In Atlanta, and in many cities across the country, it has been sweltering this summer with dramatically higher than normal temperatures. Non-profit providers and city officials continue to work together to provide resources and create solutions for those most impacted by the heat.

Gateway Center continues to serve as both a resource and solution for our unhoused neighbors who are enduring the extreme elements this summer. Individuals experiencing homelessness are more likely to experience heat exposure related illnesses, including death, due to the extreme heat we have been experiencing in our city.

Through the work of our outreach teams and in collaboration with other city agencies and non-profit organizations, Gateway Center is increasing awareness among the unhoused community regarding available resources that can assist them in battling the summer heat. In the summer, Gateway Center serves as a cooling center for those in need of relief from the extreme heat. In addition, we provide individuals with water to fight dehydration, showers to cool body temperatures, and clothing that is dry and clean.

We are beyond appreciative of our supporters and allies who have provided financial gifts to support our ability to provide critical services, like the cooling center and associated resources, which aren’t traditionally covered through grant fundraising efforts. Our team thanks everyone involved for supporting the unhoused community this summer. Because of your support, we are truly saving lives!

Sincerely,

Raphael Holloway, MA, LPC

CEO, Gateway Center

Program Spotlight

Fulton County Homeless Assessment Centers

In collaboration with Fulton County's Homeless Services Division, Gateway Center serves as the lead agency for the coordinated intake and assessment of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in North and South Fulton. Coordinated intake and assessment is a recognized best practice model by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and is being used as the “first stop” for individuals and families experiencing homelessness who are seeking housing placements.

Gateway Center’s team operates the Fulton County Homeless Assessment Centers, which provide individuals experiencing homelessness in North and South Fulton the opportunity to be assessed for housing utilizing the Vulnerability Index-Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool (VI-SPDAT). The VI-SPDAT allows our team to prioritize individuals and families for housing based on the severity of needs and quickly link them to the best housing solutions available.

A Family Reunited In Their New Home

After being illegally evicted from her home, London's family had no place to go. Because she did not want her children to experience the stress and trauma of being unsheltered, she sent them to stay with family while she sought assistance from the Fulton County Homeless Assessment Center, which is operated by Gateway Center.

After working directly with Richard Headley, one of Gateway Center’s Outreach Workers at the Fulton County Homeless Assessment Center, London received Emergency Lodging Assistance. While she was residing at the hotel, she also received assistance with food and transportation. Because London was no longer worried about where she would sleep each night, she was able to not only maintain her current employment, but she also found an additional part-time job and saved up enough funds to secure a new home for her family. She is grateful to have been given a second chance, and she shared that obtaining permanent housing allowed her family to be reunited while providing them the stability necessary to thrive.

When asked about the support she received, London said,

“Richard always stayed positive. He walked me through each step of my journey to stable housing, including helping me establish a plan to increase my savings. Richard went above and beyond to help my family and to ensure I had all my children under one roof again.”

Gateway Center is a leader in the provision of housing and supportive services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County. We need your support to continue providing strategic and innovative programs and services that will empower our guests to obtain sustainable income and secure stable housing.

The Lift 2.0 Program is an initiative with the City of Atlanta and led by Partners for Home where outreach wokers move individuals in encampments to a hotel. Individuals in this program receive case management services, become document ready, receive rapid rehousing, and are placed in apartments procured by Open Doors.
