Dear valued partners and friends,

June marks the beginning of the wettest months in Hong Kong, and with the torrential rain comes a cosy memory that I’d like to share with you.

One cold, rainy evening, my love for cooking was rekindled as I felt the need for a soul-nourishing dish. I opened my pantry to find three modest ingredients: rice noodle, ginger, and spring onion. I thought to myself, these are perfect for a hearty, traditional noodle soup.

There’s something magical about taking simple ingredients and transforming them into a beautiful, flavourful dish. The humble rice noodle, the common spring onion, and the crude ginger come together to create a rich, soul soothing dish that’s both comforting and full of character.

This transformation reminds me of the historical evolution of Kowloon. Once an unassuming area — even rough in some parts — with a storied past, it has grown into a vibrant, dynamic part of Hong Kong, rich with culture, history and flavour. Every corner offers a new story and a taste of its unique heritage.

In this newsletter, we will explore what makes Kowloon a captivating and must-visit destination. Discover serene temples that celebrate the often untold stories of female monks and Buddhist icons, another temple where three religions peacefully coexist, and bustling streets filled with wet and dry markets, brimming with artefacts and treasures unique to the area. There is so much to uncover in this vibrant and diverse area.

Together, let’s cook up an adventure for your guests, rich in character and flavour, and sure to warm their hearts like a comforting bowl of noodle soup.

Yāt louh seuhn fùng!

Yours,

Richard

An Empowering Grace

We invite your guests to step into the serene world of Chi Lin Nunnery, where the spirit of femininity is celebrated in all its grace and strength. Nestled amidst lush gardens and tranquil ponds, Chi Lin Nunnery stands as a testament to the power and resilience of women. Listen to the stories of the devoted nuns who call this sanctuary home, how they uphold the ancient traditions and teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha, the goddess of mercy Guanyin.

While your travellers are in the temple, they can admire the intricate architecture that reflects these amazing women’s dedication to peace and harmony. As the guests further wander through the halls adorned with intricate wood carvings and elegant statues, they will feel a sense of reverence for the generations of women who have found solace and inspiration within these sacred walls. Chi Lin Nunnery is not just a place of worship; it's a symbol of empowerment and enlightenment, inviting all to embrace the divine feminine within themselves.

A Tale of Tolerance and Tranquility

Our next destination highlight is Wong Tai Sin Temple and its inspiring interfaith legacy. Here, the fascinating story unfolds of Asia’s three major religions: Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, peacefully coexisting under one roof. As guests wander through the ornate halls and intricate gardens of this revered sanctuary, they will witness the profound unity and respect shared among worshippers of different faiths. From the vibrant rituals of Taoist devotees to the serene prayers of Buddhists and the timeless wisdom of Confucian teachings, Wong Tai Sin Temple serves as a beacon of tolerance and understanding. Its history is a testament to the power of mutual respect and acceptance, reminding us that despite our differences, we are all bound by a shared humanity.

Another intriguing aspect of the temple is its reputation for answering prayers through a practice called kau chim, also known as Chinese fortune sticks. This tradition allows worshippers to pose questions and interpret answers from flat sticks inscribed with text or numerals, embodying the temple's mystical charm and spiritual significance.

Where Bargains and Barters Buzz

The final highlight destinations are the Yau Ma Tei and Ladies Markets. Yau Ma Tei market offers a venture into the Jade Market, a bustling bazaar where hundreds of stalls display a stunning array of jade pieces, from intricate jewellery to larger ornamental carvings. The market provides an opportunity to witness the skill and artistry of jade craftsmen, who create exquisite pieces ranging from rings and bracelets to statues and amulets. Your visitors can also find an assortment of other gemstones and antiques. The Jade Market is not just a place to buy precious items; it's a cultural experience where travellers can learn about the significance of jade in local traditions and perhaps even see artisans at work. As a tip, bargaining is common, allowing for an interactive and engaging shopping experience. The vibrant atmosphere and the sheer variety of goods make the Jade Market a must-visit spot for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and craftsmanship.

Just a 10-minute walk from Yau Ma Tei market is the alluring and lively Ladies Market. Initially named for its wide selection of products traditionally targeted at women, such as clothing, accessories, handbags, and beauty items, the market became popular for offering such fashionable and affordable goods. Over time, it evolved to include a variety of other merchandise, attracting both men and women, but the name Ladies Market persisted due to its origins. Its offerings include souvenirs, toys, electronics and household items. The market is popular for its haggling culture, so make sure to remind your guests to brush up on their haggling skills! Besides shopping, visitors can enjoy a taste of local street food and snacks from various stalls. The market's energy, variety, and the cultural experience it offers make it a must-visit destination in Hong Kong.

Kowloon is a vibrant tapestry waiting to be unravelled. I'd love to hear what interests you most, and together we can craft a personalised itinerary that's unforgettable for your travellers.
