Water Resiliency Projects

E. Broadway Pipeline Project Update

July 1, 2025

Dear Neighbor,

EWEB is replacing water distribution mains and services on E. Broadway and a section of Hilyard St. This much-needed project will replace 77-year old pipes with larger diameter pipes to increase flow for fire protection, meet increased demand, and provide reliability for years to come.

What to expect in the coming weeks

EWEB crews have completed the section between Alder St. and Hilyard St. The next area of focus will be on the section of Hilyard between E. 8th Ave. and E. Broadway and is expected to begin during the week of July 7.

Unlike other projects, EWEB and contractor crews will primarily work at night in order to reduce traffic impacts for cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. Work will typically begin at 7:00 p.m. and conclude by 6:00 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning.

Estimated Timeframe

June – September 2025

Traffic Impacts

Hilyard St. will be closed to through traffic during night construction. Signage and barricades will be placed in advance of closures and detours will be provided.

For everyone’s safety, please observe all posted traffic controls, parking restrictions, and detours. Cyclists and pedestrians should take extra care to follow traffic and any closure signage.

From This to That: Why We Need to Update Your Pipes

When EWEB replaces distribution pipes, we improve what is put back in the ground. Larger pipes enable increased flow for fire protection, and the ductile iron material ensures that the pipes are strong, durable, and have a long lifespan – estimated to be over 100 years!

Coordination with the City of Eugene

The E. Broadway project is in coordination with the City of Eugene’s “Broadway Paving and Sidewalks” project to repave, improve the pedestrian experience, and provide space for commercial deliveries. The partnership reduces the costs for both the City of Eugene and EWEB and minimizes traffic impacts for the community.  Although this paving project begins near Franklin Boulevard, it is not the City’s Franklin Boulevard Transformation Project, which is scheduled for construction in 2027.
