Jacob Duplantis, son of David and Mary Duplantis, was named the Outstanding Graduate of the Class of 2019. The Outstanding Graduate Award is the highest award, and it goes to the graduate who best exemplifies the spirit and purpose of the school. The faculty members who know and who have worked with the seniors vote on the recipient. The following categories are considered: character, scholarship, service, school spirit, and leadership.

Mark Hue received the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Charism Award presented by Bro. Patrick McGinity, S.C. This award recognizes a student who reaches out in compassion to his fellow man, not only in prayer, but also in acts of service and support, thus furthering the presence of Christ in our world today.

Faith Hebert received the Sisters of Mount Carmel Charism Award. This award recognizes the graduate who exhibits a faith life that encourages her to give of herself to other students and to those in her civic and church parishes. Like Mary, a woman of simplicity and faith, the recipient brings hope and love into her world. Sr. Denis Rodrigue (right) and Sr. Alyce Abate presented the award.

Spring Sports Recap

GYMNASTICS
This year there was only one female participant in gymnastics. Victoria Truxillo was a 4- year letterman, LHSAA All-State team, 1st in bars, 3rd on the floor and 4th overall in LEVEL 4.

TENNIS
The tennis teams had a great season under the direction of the new Head Coaches, Natalie Bernard and Chloe Collins. Both the boys and girls teams won the Bayou River League and then moved on to compete in the Region IV, Division II Tournament at UNO. The Girls were Runner-up in the region, while the boys took 3rd. The girls qualified 1 singles entry and all three doubles entries to state and the boys qualified their top two doubles teams to state. The girls took 6th overall and the boys tied for 5th overall in the final standings for Division II.

GOLF
The girls improved throughout the season and represented EDW well. They simply lacked the experience to make the state cut. The young talent in the boys developed well and by season end had EDW right at the top competing for titles. They finished their season as District Runner-up and Regional Runner-up and qualified for the state tournament.

BASEBALL
The Cardinal Baseball team set the tone of the season with one game at a time; trying to stay in the moment and cherish each opportunity. This mind set put the team on a record setting 27 consecutive game win streak and a Co-District Championship. Seeded # 7 for the playoffs, the Cardinals swept St. Louis Catholic in the 2 out of 3 series. Heading into the quarterfinals, the team was ready to face those Cougars of St. Thomas More. The team had a great competitive three game series with the Cougars, but came up short in the 2nd and 3rd games. The team set a new school winning record with an overall record of 30-3.

SOFTBALL
The softball team was under new leadership this season with Head Coach Juli Dardar and Assistant Coach Caitlin Carroll. The team returned a few key starters and added a group of young talented athletes which enabled the Cardinals to improve into a competitive squad. The team went 4 and 2 in District for a 3rd place finish and a 16 and 15 regular season record. This qualified them for the playoffs as a 13th seed where they faced the #4 seed DeLaSalle. The Cardinals battled and held the Cavaliers scoreless through almost four innings when the Caveliers bats came alive to capture the Regional win. It was a good season for the team, and one that has laid the foundation for a successful future.

TRACK
The teams had a very competitive regular season and were prepared to meet the challenge when the District 7-4A meet rolled around. The boys gave a tremendous performance in both the field and running events and captured the District Championship, while the girls fought through illness and injury to bring home the Runner-up title. Being in 4A for track makes it extremely tough because EDW falls in the region with the top track programs in the state, but the athletes did their best and both teams took 4th place at the Region IV - Class 4A. The girls had qualifiers in two events while the boys had qualifiers in four events at the State Championships in Baton Rouge.

Teach er Highlight

Marcey Zeringue was named the Brother Linus Teacher of the Year at the Underclassman Awards Ceremony on May 16.

The award recognizes an educator who teaches in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart by setting clear, high, worthy, and profound expectations for themselves and their students. Faculty members select the recipient of the award annually. Two hallmarks of the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart are personal attention and academic excellence.

"I am deeply honored to be chosen by my co-workers as the Brother Linus Teacher of the Year. As I look back on God's many blessings I have received throughout my career, I am grateful for the relationships built in the classroom and on the playing field with my students and my peers. I truly enjoy the lessons my students teach. In receiving this award, it is both humbling and gratifying.   It encourages me to continue to do my best to serve as an example to others that hard work and perseverance has its own reward," said Zeringue.

This school year is her 22nd year at E. D. White. She graduated from Nicholls State University with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education and Biology in 1997.
