CARENN ELIZABETH OLSON

April 20, 1952, to October 12, 2025

Carenn Elizabeth Olson, 73, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, at the Frances Residential Care home in Tucson, Arizona.

Born on April 20, 1952, in Wasco, CA to John W. and Francisca Antonia (Toni) Eastridge. The family moved to Bakersfield, CA shortly afterward. Carenn attended East Bakersfield High School and graduated as a straight A student and salutatorian of the Class of 1970. During high school she was also an AFS foreign exchange student in Switzerland. Carenn attended UCLA where she majored in German and earned a BA in 1974. In 1975, she and first husband Carl Olson, moved to Tucson, Arizona. As a graduate teaching assistant, she taught German courses while earning a MA in German from the University of Arizona in 1978.

Carenn taught for 37 years in Tucson – for the Tucson Unified School District and Pima Community College District. Like many teachers, Carenn had a passion for life-long learning, strong communication and organizational skills, and dedication to the success of her students.

Among her circle of friends, she was recognized for her generosity of time, dedicated support to them and their families, her depth of knowledge, and as a delightful lunch and coffee buddy. She welcomed everyone with warmth, grace, and humor, which often turned strangers into friends with ease. She will be missed.

Carenn was preceded in death by her second husband, Keith Emerson, and her parents, John W. and Toni Eastridge. She is survived by her brother, John R. Eastridge and sister-in-law Kris, of Bakersfield, CA; her niece, Janelle Eastridge of San Francisco, CA, and her nephew Tyler Eastridge and his wife Darian, grandniece Maple, and grandnephew Quincy of Poway, CA.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Cheri Clinton and the Tucson Collaborative Community Care (TC3), Patricia Trujillo and Vincent Sesma and the Frances Residential Care home, and Harmony Hospice of Tucson for their professionalism and compassion in providing care and comfort to Carenn during her final journey. Also, to longtime friends Liz Caccamise and April Willmore of Tucson for their support during Carenn’s lengthy illness.

A memorial service and reception will be held Tuesday, November 4th at 10am at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams Street, Tucson AZ.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association,
the American Diabetic Association, or a charity of your choice.

“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.”
Luke 6:21

Excerpts from The Bishop's Epistle regarding upcoming food bank concerns:

"
SNAP benefits, often referred to as “food stamps,” will end on November 1st, as you have likely heard in the news. This will put additional pressure on our congregational food banks [...]

There are a lot of places online where you can look up data about who comes to food banks, and why they are there (lots of working people, families with children,
military members, college students…)

But mainly, I want to say today that our food banks serve whoever comes–there is no test to be worthy or deserving. You just need help figuring out where your next week’s meals are going to come from. This is the simplest form of loving our neighbor–sharing food. And we do so without shame or blame. All you have to be is hungry. Hopefully, every person who comes finds it a blessing.

Not all people who come to our food banks are eligible for SNAP benefits, but the loss of those benefits will greatly expand those who are in need of food. As does the continued government shutdown and furloughs of employees. Food costs are rising, and our food banks need our help."

As you can imagine, this will impact GSP's own Joseph's Pantry.
We are doing all we can to prepare for increased needs, but if you are able to help financially or by picking up a few extra groceries, please consider doing so. Checks can be made out as usual to "Grace St. Paul's" with a memo for Joseph's Pantry, and food items can be dropped off on Sunday in the big red bin or during office hours Monday through Friday.

PozCafe, TIHAN's monthly lunch for people living with HIV, is an opportunity for the community to get out of the house, meet other positive+ people, and enjoy a great meal! On the third Thursday of each month, volunteers from local faith communities around Tucson get together to serve a fantastic and delicious lunch followed by time to socialize, participate in a game of bingo, enjoy our raffle, and pick up a care package.

Grace St. Paul's is sponsoring November's PozCafe, and we need 6 volunteers who are willing and able to assist with setup, serving, and clean up (about 5 hours total) We are also collecting hand sanitizer (travel size is fine) and bar soap. Items can be dropped off during normal office hours or given directly to Ricky on Sunday.

PozCafe will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on
Thursday November 20th from 9am-2pm.

Every Friday from 12:15pm - 1:30pm in the Bloom Room

Our Centering Prayer group continues to meet every Friday at 12:15 in the Bloom Room for the shared practice of Centering Prayer. Our membership includes people from other faith traditions as well as many GSP parishioners.

The practice of Centering Prayer can be done alone by anyone anywhere, but our members find that being together (even in silence) really makes a difference. Our group is open to all who are in need of some quiet, dedicated time to rest in the presence of God in this busy and uneasy world.

Blessings,
