Letters of congratulation and recognition pins were recently mailed to a total of 68 municipal administrators having completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years of municipal service by December 31, 2021. In addition, Ronald Campbell, Chief Administrative Officer for the District of Lantzville, BC received special recognition for his 45 years of service.

“I am thrilled we can provide this kind of recognition to our members for their dedication to public service and municipal management,” said Jack Benzaquen, President of CAMA and City Manager for the City of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC. “On behalf of our Board of Directors, thank you to all the recipients for their dedication to the elected officials and residents they serve.”

The breakdown of 2022 Long Services Awards is as follows: Ten Years of Service – 20 awards; Fifteen Years of Service – 18 awards; Twenty Years of Service – 13 awards; Twenty-Five Years of Service – four awards; Thirty Years of Service – ten awards; Thirty-Five Years of Service – one award; and, Forty-five Years of Service – 1 award.  For a complete list of the recipients, visit the CAMA website.

CAMA’s Long Service Recognition Awards program is based on the number of years of full-time, paid employment in a local government in a management capacity, either as a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) or reporting directly to a CAO.

The Long Service Recognition Awards are granted after ten years of service and are then given in five-year increments.

Leader Succession Planning Program

The City of Mississauga's Leader Succession Planning Program was an intentional strategic decision to establish a formal program to grow future leaders at levels brought on by the increased war for talent that was facing them. This program intentionally chose to ignore the traditional replacement planning concept and built an innovative approach of growing leaders at all levels creating higher exposure and ability for the cross pollination of leadership talent across the organization. The early stage of the program was limited to senior level leadership positions and was completely paper based with little visibility of the identified high potential (HiPo) employees and their talent details. This innovative program, with its 110 annual talent panels involving over 500 leaders and identifying over 225 HiPo's, was taken to the next level with SAP SuccessFactors integrated Talent Management Platform. This out of box solution was configured to mirror this mature and highly endorsed business practice. Suddenly all leaders had information at their fingertips providing the opportunity to conduct in-depth workforce metrics further thwarting the war for talent while at the same time creating a mature "talk talent" culture of development.

Hazardous Materials Management Training

The WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDG) and BC Hazardous Waste Regulation (BCHWR) establishes minimum training requirements for workers. City staff were previously participating in individual training programs. However, the City was concerned this approach may not be fully compliant nor ensure appropriate staff safety relative to the work performed. The City identified gaps in training services the City was receiving by conducting an analysis that identified specialized training needs, relevant competencies for staff and the level of expertise required for their corresponding work functions. The City decided to transition from basic training approaches to qualified and competency-based training by developing a future-proofed program within a new environmental and safety-focused culture. Accordingly, the City developed and delivered competency-based training using a customized program to meet its operation's unique needs. The new training model provides staff with a methodology guiding them through the learning process, turning passive recipients of knowledge into active, engaged participants better equipped to apply what they have learned in daily practice.
