Know the Code: Changes to Alberta's Employment Standards Coming January 1

The updated Employment Standards Code comes into effect on January 1, 2018.  As these changes are the first overhaul of the Code since 1988, updating organizational policies and practices have become an area of deliberate attention for nonprofit organizations that employ staff.

Both nonprofit employers and employees will be significantly impacted by the changes. As an employer, you need to be aware of changes and update organizational policies and practices in accordance with the Code. The Employment Standards Code currently impacts the nonprofit sector more than the Labour Relations Code does, and remains the focus of our work. Read our blog for more information.

Changes to Workers' Compensation Board and Occupational Health and Safety in 2018
The Government of Alberta has announced changes to the Workers' Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act, coming into effect January 1, 2018, and June 1, 2018, respectively. Among changes, employers are required to take steps to protect their employees from hazards and prevent workplace violence and harassment. Joint work site health and safety committees will be required for workplaces with 20 or more employees, and a health and safety representative will be required in workplaces with between five and 19 employees. To inform our submission, w e invite you to share your thoughts on how Budget 2018 can contribute to a thriving sector in a two-question flash survey.
Reflect (articles, blogs, and other ideas worth sharing)
There have been robust discussions this year around reconciliation, with Crystal Fraser and Sara Komarnisky from the University of Alberta contributing to the conversation in this blog post. Together, they wrote 150 Acts of Reconciliation for the last 150 days of 2017. Many of these are small, everyday acts that average Canadians can undertake, but others are more provocative that encourage people to think about Indigenous-settler relationships in new ways. You are encouraged to use #150Acts to share your engagement with each item on the list. Published by activehistory.ca

In this survey, more than 3,000 stakeholders from the nonprofit sector-including nonprofit executives and staff, board members, and donors-provided detailed information about the leadership and management practices of a nonprofit organization with which they are involved. Analysis of responses from nonprofit executives, staff, and board members revealed that the three leading challenges facing their organizations are board governance, funding, and impact evaluation. In each of these areas, more than half of respondents indicated that their organization struggles to perform well.
