Hello Caldwell Baptists!

I hope you all are doing well and staying warm. Like many of you, we have been iced in, and it’s not melting very fast. Fortunately, Martha Jo and I have been able to do some of our work from home. I want to encourage all of you to take time to worship even when you can’t get out and attend your church services in person. Our Lord is certainly worthy of our devotion to worship!

Last week I gave you a bit of an introduction to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), how the organization is structured as a cooperative ministry and missions organization governed by its member churches. Over the next few weeks, I want to give you a more detailed explanation of what it means to be a cooperating church in the SBC. Your church is, along with over 46,000 sister-churches, the Southern Baptist Convention. The SBC, the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (BSCNC), and the Caldwell Baptist Association exist as extensions of your church and other member churches on mission together. As I mentioned last week, the local church, meaning your church, is at the top of the organization structure. It is important to reemphasize that your church is autonomous. For clarity, every individual church in cooperation with any or all SBC entities is self-governed, making your own decisions, setting your own leadership structure, and giving financial support as your church so decides.

Your church decides which Southern Baptist organization to be affiliated with. It is your choice to affiliate with all three, two, or even one. It is my opinion that being member churches of all three organizations provides beneficial and effective means for doing ministry and missions beyond what your church alone can do. All three organizations are essentially the same in purpose and belief structure, but differ in function and scope of ministry and missions. I am especially appreciative of the fact that our conventions and association are unified by our doctrinal statements of faith (the Baptist Faith and Message 2000), and the fact that the leadership structure comes from member churches. There is no perfect organization of cooperative ministry and missions such as our SBC, but I am thankful that the Southern Baptist Convention as a whole is theologically conservative and is led by men of God who seek His glory first and foremost.

Where there are differences of opinion, and there will be when humans are involved, our leaders strive for unity, peace, and biblically based, conservative Christian values. There will always be individual churches that have more moderate to liberal ideologies, and overall these churches are a small minority. But remember, every member church is autonomous. A church that crosses lines of biblical truth and practices that are contrary to the Baptist Faith and Message is held accountable, and sadly, may face being dis-fellowshipped as an SBC member church.

As Southern Baptists we firmly believe: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,...” Matthew 6:33a

Be Joyful!

Chuck
