Many of you have a spirit of anxiety about the future of Forrest Burdette. Some is related to the upcoming General Conference concerning differing understanding of human sexuality that have threatened to split the denomination. More of you are anxious about who the next senior pastor will be and the process moving forward. All 12 members of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (Reg Hart, chair) met with Dr. Frank Shomo, the Midland South District Superintendent, last Thursday. A profile of the church was developed which included church ministries, pastoral needs, the Hurricane community, as well as opportunities and challenges moving forward. Dr. Shomo will share that profile with the Bishop and eight other District Superintendents, and after much prayer and discernment will determine the right person to be appointed to Forrest Burdette. (As UM pastors we are appointed to a congregation/s not hired by the church.) I was a part of that process for 5 years as a District Superintendent, and know how seriously the Bishop and Cabinet take this work. You can rest assured that an effective, faithful pastor will be appointed here. You have trusted the process in the past; you can trust it now. When the appointment has been determined it will be shared with the Staff-Parish Relations Committee and then with the congregation. As Jesus spoke to his disciples, "Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid" might be good words for you to remember during these times of transition.

Grace & freedom,
Ellis
