 August 5, 2019

Today is a special day for me in more than one way. Yes, it is my birthday, and in addition today marks the twentieth anniversary of my coming to Teays Valley. Twenty years ago today was my first day on the job at Forrest Burdette as full-time music minister. For seven years this was my position followed by six years as organist/accompanist at St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Charleston, six years as accompanist/assistant organist at Charleston Baptist Temple, and now two years in a return to Forrest Burdette in my present position.
I can honestly say God has blessed me in every step of this journey. He has indeed enlarged my territory as it says in the prayer of Jabez. His hand has been with me! My life is better in so many ways I could not have even imagined had I not answered God's call to come here. It was a step of faith to give up the security of the business of my teaching studio in Jackson County and the wonderful people at Epworth UMC in Ripley, and that step of faith resulted in the blessings I now enjoy.
It's a great day for me to celebrate!
Mike Barnhouse, Organist/Accompanist
(Happy Birthday, Mike!)
We Care Ministry Seeking More Teams
The Forrest Burdette "We Care" ministry focuses on monthly lay visitation to our members who are not able to easily leave their homes or care facilities and could use a friendly visit. If you would like to be part of this important ministry, please contact the church office, or talk to one of our pastors. Next meeting: this Wednesday, August 7, 12:00 p.m.
Young Adult Cookout at The Daniels' House
This Friday, August 9th!  Young Adults will gather for our monthly hang out & Bible Study, this month at Pastor Jeremy's house for a cookout! Bring a side dish, and come hang out from 6:00 p.m. until the food runs out! (5139 Briar Road, Cross Lanes)
City-Wide Yard Sale
The Hurricane Citywide Yard Sale will be held this Saturday , August 10, 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. If you are interested in reserving a parking space at Forrest Burdette to hold your own sale, please contact the church office (304-562-5903). Spaces are $10 each and can be set up after 6:00 p.m., on Friday, August 9. Specific spaces are not assigned; first come, first served.
The United Methodist Women are sponsoring this event. They will be selling hot dogs, BBQ's, drinks, and Country Store items inside the church during this popular community event. Your donations of homemade baked goods are welcome for the Country Store! Please bring your baked goods to the church on Friday, August 9. Also, volunteers are welcome to join in the fellowship of working the lunch counter with our ladies on Saturday!
Operation Christmas Child
The quick response to our request for school supplies and toys for the OCC Packing Party has been amazing! Thank you! We're packing 150 boxes for girls and boys ages 10-14 and already have enough crayons, colored pencils, erasers, sharpeners, pencils and stuffed animals.
During the month of August, please bring thin notebooks, pencil pouches, and toys for boxes: LEGO's, marbles, cards, dominoes , balls, and dolls work well for this age group.
In addition to purchasing items, thank you to those who've come to sew dresses and backpacks on Tuesdays. We need fabric to make 50 more dresses and seamstresses, too! Please join us Tuesday, from 12:30-3:30, in Byrd Hall.
What a blessing to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to children around the world. We are blessed to be a blessing.

A Kind Donation
Forrest Burdette recently received the following letter:
"The Putnam County Homecoming Committee is very pleased to send you the enclosed check on behalf of Hurricane Middle School students. At our Homecoming last year, they won the competition for the class that donated the most canned goods. They decided that they would donate the money to your church, instead of having a pizza party for their class, in appreciation of all the good work you do in your community. Sincerely, The Putnam County Homecoming Committee"
Many thanks to those HMS students!
