E-Magine That!

December 2024

From the Desk of Samie Jo Johnson, Artistic Director

Dear Partner,

We hope that during this busy season, you can find time to relax with your friends and loved ones. At Imagination Theater, we cherish those moments to just breathethey're rare!

But that's good news: What has been keeping us so busy lately is lots and lots of programs in schools throughout the Chicago area. (Below, you'll see a list of all the places we've been in the past couple of months. Wow!)

Whether in the city, a suburb, or a rural area, whether at a private school or a public one, kids need what Imagination Theater brings to them. Time and money are precious commodities at any school. Engaging Imagination Theater for a day of assemblies or multiple days of a residency shows a commitment to social-emotional learning, performing arts education, and a healthy school community.

It's also an investment in the magic of live theater. After a recent show, a student came up to me and said, "I really liked the play! Can I give you a hug?" You can't get that kind of interaction from an app, a website, or a video!

Not every school can afford our programming. That's where you come in: Your donation goes directly toward offsetting our costs so we don't have to say "no" to a school because they can't pay us. More learning, more magic, and yes, more hugs ... that's what your gift brings.

During the holidays and all year long, we are so grateful for your support!

Warm wishes,

Samie Jo Johnson

Spotlight on New Ensemble Members: Meet PJ!

Hi, PJ. Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I'm a born and raised Chicagoan. I went to school for theatre and now do improv and stand-up. I also work in mental health with a background in fitness as well.

What drew you to Imagination Theater?

What drew me to Imagination Theater is the fact that the company believes theatre can start a conversation. I feel like people are not aware of the educational purposes that theatre has, and I want to be a part of a company that helps bring that to the forefront, especially for children.

Do you have any memories that stand out from your first few shows with us?

My first show. I think I was so nervous about performing well when the question I realized was important was, “Did they gain something from this?” I was genuinely shocked to see how many kids were engaging in the show.

What else are you up to?

Right now I am a Bob Curry scholar at Second City (BC 10!), which concludes in February with a monthlong show. I am also currently doing stand-up around the city as well as performing improv with other teams. I also help with my friend's mental health organization, The CornerStore Chicago.

Thank you to all of our sponsors!
