E-Magine That!

February 2025

From the Desk of Samie Jo Johnson, Artistic Director

Dear Partner,

To borrow a phrase from Illinois State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (14th District),

what have you done lately to "put some gas in your tank?" Recently, Imagination Theater was pleased to attend the first of what is expected to be an annual symposium by the Chicago Prevention Alliance. Rep. Cassidy (on the left in this photo) was a keynote speaker, along with Chicago Alderman Daniel La Spata (1st Ward, pictured on the right).

Convened by the Chicago Children's Advocacy Center, the CPA is made up of Chicagoland organizations that offer sexual harm prevention programming for children. Imagination Theater is a CPA memberin fact, we're on the steering committeebecause of our Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program. During a difficult time for many of us (and a highly charged time for all of us), it was energizing for us to hear from Rep. Cassidy, Ald. La Spata, an impressive slate of breakout speakers, and our colleagues.

While the focus was specifically on sexual harm prevention, the symposium was relevant to all of Imagination Theater's work. One theme that came up often was empathy and how it can help break some of the profoundly damaging cycles that harm all of us, whether directly or indirectly.

Thank you so much for your support as we continue to teach about sexual harm prevention, healthy conflict resolution, empathy, and kindness. And as this long Chicago winter continues on, don't forget to "refuel" by being kind to yourself, too!

Warm wishes,

Samie Jo Johnson

"To you and your team from Imagination Theater, I would like to extend a round of applause! They were exceptional at each grade level! The elementary students really enjoyed the interactive participation; those selected to go on stage as well as their peers in the audience who cheered them on. It was exciting to see and hear the thoughtful answers they gave when answering the tough questions."

Spotlight on New Ensemble Members: Meet Olivia!

Hi, Olivia. Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! I’m Olivia Reamer, and I am so excited to be joining IT. I’m an Elmhurst native and recent graduate of Elmhurst University, where I studied Spanish, history, and theater. I work as a Spanish teacher through local park districts and as a youth theater director.

What drew you to Imagination Theater?

I love that IT strives to serve diverse communities in Chicago and is trying to expand its reach toward Spanish speakers in the area. I was drawn to IT because of this new focus on implementing Spanish into their programs. It makes me excited to combine my passions for theater and Spanish, and I am looking forward to helping spread important ideas to a broader audience by including more Spanish in my work with IT.

Do you have any memories that stand out from your first few shows with us?

One of my first shows with IT was a college tour at John Carroll University in Ohio, where we performed an important show about navigating the new relationships and sexual challenges of college. I was very impressed by how seriously the new freshmen took the show and how receptive and open they were to discussing some uncomfortable topics. I loved how many of the guys in the audience were not afraid to call out inappropriate behavior and advocate for respecting others. It was a very refreshing experience!

What else are you up to?

I sometimes perform outside of IT in local shows. I work as a Spanish teacher for 3-year-olds through adults with Language in Action in addition to directing middle school and high school theater often at Timothy Christian Schools in Elmhurst, where I have mentored high school student directors as they learn about directing while working on short plays with middle school actors.

Thank you to all of our sponsors!
