Aloha,
I have just received notice (via
KITV News and
Civil Beat) of the first confirmed case of the Coronavirus in Hawaiʻi.
I write again to urge special care.
With that, I am resending my message of February 28 (see link below).
I hope all congregations will immediately and completely stop “auto-intinction” (folk dipping the host into the wine themselves during administration of Holy Communion). In normal times, having the Eucharistic Minister take the host, dip it slightly in the wine and place it on the tongue of the person receiving the Sacrament, is preferred -- if intinction is allowed at all. In this situation, that too may be problematic. Just as we certainly don’t want many fingers in the chalice, we also don’t want a Eucharistic Minister to inadvertently touch the tongue or mouth of an infected person. If folk are concerned, at this point it is best to receive the bread alone. Please remind folk that reception of the bread (the Body) alone is full and complete participation in the Sacrament.
If the chalice is offered, please remind the Eucharistic Minister that if a person has crossed their arms after receiving the bread, the Eucharistic Minister needs to pause in front of the person, raise the chalice slightly and say the words of administration. Do not push the chalice toward the person and don’t just walk on by. Acknowledge the person as noted and then move on to the next person.
Clergy need to strongly urge folk to offer the peace to those immediately around them and, ideally, with a smile and a bow. At the most, you can suggest a handshake with the use of hand sanitizer before and after exchanging the peace. Please limit the time for the exchange of the peace. Do not pass through the congregation. Clergy and other liturgical ministers need to set the example in this interesting time. Please no hugging.
You might consider how you will connect with folk if you can’t have worship on Sundays for a time. I suggest introducing the
Mission St. Clare website so folk can do Morning and Evening Prayer at home on their own. The Communication Design Team can do training on live streaming worship or preparing for posting after recording if a church is interested offering such an option. (Contact Rae Costa rcosta@episcopalhawaii.org for more information.) If it appears needed, I will prepare online reflections with Morning Prayer to be posted on the website for personal use on Sunday mornings by those unable to leave their homes.
Consider establishing a set place (for example, a bowl on a stand in the middle of the aisle) to receive monetary offerings during the liturgy rather than passing the plate for the collection. Ideally, folk can give online.
Finally, make provisions to wipe down (with a disinfectant) surfaces, handles, altar rails, etc., before and after worship.
We need to be prepared, but there is no reason to fear.
O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength: By the might of your Spirit lift us, we pray, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Your Brother in Christ Jesus,
Bob

Second Sunday in Lent
O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious
to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them
again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and
hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ
your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

REFLECTION ON THE NICENE CREED:
Filioque Clause (“who proceeds from the Father
and the son
”)
|
The “Filioque Clause” in the Nicene Creed, was, and still is, a controversy in the church in relation to the Holy Spirit. Filioque (in Latin pronounced as /filiˈokwe/) is a Latin term added to the original text of the Creed, attributed to the First Council of Constantinople, which convened in the year 381. In the late 6th century, some Churches in the West, namely the Latin (Roman Catholic) Rite, added the words "and from the Son" or Filioque. After the later Ecumenical Councils of Ephesus and the First Council of Nicaea, some Churches in the East (Orthodox), argued that the Filioque was then a violation, since the words were not included in the text by either the First Council of Constantinople or the First Council of Nicaea. It has been an enduring issue of great controversy between us, “The Church of the West” and “The Church of the East,” the Orthodox.
So, the clause is an addition to the original text, which says that the Holy Spirit "proceeds from the Father," “Filioque” is an addition, meaning “and the son.” This enduring issue of great controversy comes down to the question, “From whom did the Holy Spirit proceed, the Father, or the Father and the Son?” The addition of the Filioque seems to answer this question, indicating that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father “and Son.” Ah, but the East did not (and still does not) see this answer as universally definitive for the Church. There was so much contention over the Filioque, that it soon became an issue, between East and West, which eventually led, among other issues, to the split between them in the year 1054.

Choral Music Concert at St. Peterʻs
|
Come and join us at St. Peter's on March 22, 2020, for an evening of beautiful choral music featuring the Stanford University Chamber Chorale and St. Peterʻs very own Tokaikolo Choir!
The Stanford Chamber Chorale is Stanford’s most select choir consisting of undergraduate and graduate students from across the U.S. and around the world. Under the direction of Dr. Stephen Sano, the Stanford Chorale has toured internationally and has appeared on the Grammy first-round ballot in the categories of Choral Performance, Chamber/Small Ensemble Performance, Program Notes, and Engineering (Classical).
Our Tokaikolo choir equally impressive. They've performed at several concerts on Oahu and consistently amaze audiences with their strong voices and close harmonies typical of the deep and rich choral tradition from Tonga. If you haven't heard the Tokaikolo choir perform, you're in for a real treat!
Following the concert, we will host a brief reception with light refreshments in the Parish Hall. Doors open at 4:30 PM and the concert will be from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
