Guy was born in Honolulu on September 7, 1938. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Ordained by Bishop Harry S. Kennedy to the Diaconate in May 1963, and to the Priesthood in December 1963, he spent most of his ordained ministry as the Chaplain of Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy. He also served as a Priest at Emmanuel (Kailua), St. Matthew’s (Waimānalo), St. Mary’s (Mōʻiliʻili), St. Barnabas (Ewa Beach), Holy Spirit (Waipahu), St. Philip’s (Māʻili), St. Augustine’s (Kapa'au), and St. James' (Waimea).
Guy is survived by his wife, Jo, children and grandchildren.
Service times are pending.
ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Guy, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that he and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Continuing Series
TEACHINGS BY CLERGY
|
Priests are ordained to be “faithful pastors,
patient teachers, and wise councilors” (BCP, p. 534). These Reflections will be offered over the next few months in the e-News and on the Diocesan website
HERE.
Our third Teachings by Clergy piece is by the Rev. Paul Lillie, Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Honolulu.
REFLECTION ON THE NICENE CREED:
"He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father."
|
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated with the Feast of the Ascension. Maybe it is all those great hymns associated with the day such as “Crown him with many crowns” and “Hail the day that sees him rise, alleluia.” Everyone I know loves those two particular hymns. But I also believe my love of the Ascension was about something deeper for me, even as a child.
I was fortunate to grow up in a church with a large Sunday School program. Our church had an educational wing, and in that building there was a classroom for every grade level. On any given Sunday each classroom would be filled with 15 to 20 children attending Sunday School. Looking back, I now know that I owe much of my faith development to that graded Sunday School. That Sunday School was a gift that taught me love for Jesus Christ.
As a child I remember thinking how great the Ascension was, because it was proof that Jesus ultimately wins. Of course, there is Good Friday and Easter, and those were great days too, but the Ascension was the final chapter for me. It was proof that Jesus rose from the dead, and now he is King of the Universe. The whole world was now in good hands.
Fast-forwarding to several decades later as a priest, my excitement for our Lord’s ascension has not waned, but I have also realized people’s indifference to the event. When I was serving as a priest at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Buffalo, New York, we celebrated the Ascension every year on the fortieth day after Easter, which is always a Thursday.

EYE20! HERE WE COME!!!
Hawai'i Youth Delegation Announced
|
The Episcopal Church's triennial
Youth Event (EYE) will be taking place at the University of Maryland this July, and the Diocese of Hawai'i is proud to have a full delegation of 24 youth (plus an alternate) and four adult chaperones. Youth from O'ahu, Kaua'i, Maui and the Big Island make up this diverse delegation that will represent not only the Diocese, but the State of Hawai'i.
Following EYE20, the Hawai'i delegation will perform community service and mission in the surrounding area including Washington D.C. EYE and mission has been transformative for many of the youth who attend. It is also one of the Episcopal Church's largest events with over 1,000 high school youth in attendance.
SUPPORT NEEDED! Although the Diocese covers up to 1/3 of the cost, churches and delegates will have to come up with the balance. Please support the youth in their efforts to fundraise through car washes, bake sales, concerts and other special events. A diocesan t-shirt fundraiser will also be coming up soon.
In 2017, the EYE delegation received a huge $10,000 grant from Holy Nativity's Nellie Hartman Fund, which helped keep delegate costs to a record low! Along with the diocesan t-shirt fundraiser, churches and delegates only needed to come up with roughly $650 for this incredible experience, compared to nearly $2,000 in years past.
Stay tuned for updates and visit the Diocese's EYE20 webpage

Headlining 50th annual Martin Luther King breakfast, Presiding Bishop decries political injustice
|
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s keynote address at the 50th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast on Jan. 20 was full of Scriptural interpretation, moral lessons and charismatic preaching reminiscent of King himself. Several times, however, he jokingly reminded the audience of around 1,500 that he had been asked to give a keynote address, not a sermon.
