The deadline for consideration is Thursday, April 30th.

From the Desk of

Rabbi Cantor

Unlike Sukkot, which draws its Torah readings from two places (Leviticus 22:26-33 and Numbers 29:17-34), Pesah draws its readings from all over the place:

Which gives me so many options for what to say to you this week. What is the value of reading the same stories (the Exodus from Egypt, the laws of Pesah, the Cycle of the Holidays) multiple times, albeit with variations?

Our tradition places a high value on repetition. Repetition, shana, is a synonym for teaching. The very first book of Rabbinic Law the Mishna, is literally “the repetition”. The Rabbis of the Mishna are known as Tanaim (“repeaters”). Repetition for the sake of learning is understood as an act of love:

Bar Hei Hei said to Hillel: What is the meaning of that which is written: “Then you shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between he who serves God and he who does not serve Him” (Malachi 3:18). There are two redundancies here: “The righteous” is the same as “he who serves God,” and “the wicked” is the same as “he who does not serve Him.” Hillel said to him: The one “who serves Him” and the one “who does not serve Him” are both referring to completely righteous people. But the verse is hinting at a distinction between them, as one who reviews his studies one hundred times is not comparable to one who reviews his studies one hundred and one times. (Hagiga 9b)

Now I am in no way suggesting that we should dedicate all of our spare time to repeatedly reading the same thing as an act of spiritual devotion. But I am trying to suggest that there is something sweet about the way our Tradition invites us to delve deeper into the stories that make us who we are: there is a value in repeating the Passover Seder, in retelling the same story in multiple different ways. It helps us to remember. It gives greater depth to the narrative. And it reminds us that it’s important.

In your family, what are the stories that you love to repeat? For the Jewish people it is the Exodus, as we will reread in the Haggadah,

And even if we were all wise, we were all understanding, we were all elders, we all knew the Torah, we would still be obligated to tell about the Exodus from Egypt. And the more one tell about the Exodus from Egypt, behold it is praiseworthy.
