Mechanics of Prayer

Every prayer service, morning, afternoon, evening, weekday, sabbath, or holiday, has at its core the Amidah, which is also known as Ha-Tefilah (“The Prayer”), Amidah (“Standing”) and—for weekdays— Shemoneh Esreh (“Eighteen”).

Every Amidah begins with the same three blessings, and ends with the same three blessings. On Shabbat, the Festivals (Pesaḥ, Shavu’ot, Sukkot), and Yom Kippur a single blessing falls between the opening and closing blessings, for a total of seven; the Musaf Amidah of Rosh Hashanah has three middle blessings, while the weekday Amidah has thirteen.

(For those who may be bothered by the mathematics of the weekday Amidah whose nickname is “Eighteen” but which is comprised of three opening, thirteen middle, and three concluding blessing—which totals nineteen—the nickname was in place before an additional blessing was added by Rabban Gamliel at Yavneh).

One way of understanding the sequence of the prayer is to consider it as akin to what a lawyer might say when representing a client in a court of law: Because of God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, we have Standing to be heard (1). Because God is very powerful, God as Jurisdiction to hear our plea (2). Because God is Holy, we are willing to state our request (3). Having done so, we express our hope that the prayer will be Effective (1), we are Grateful for the opportunity (2), and we hope to be made Complete through our prayers(3).
