Dear Friends,
We are delighted to welcome you to another edition of the Strangulation Prevention E-News. In this issue, we are excited to share a comprehensive collection of resources on non-fatal strangulation, specifically tailored for Judges.
Over the years, our legal advisory team has collaborated with several states, including Florida, Minnesota, Ohio, and Virginia, to develop judicial resources aimed at increasing awareness and understanding the gravity of non-fatal strangulation. These materials are designed to assist judges in identifying appropriate charges and ensuring accountability for offenders who commit these serious crimes.
Given the high lethality risk and significant danger posed by non-fatal strangulation, it is imperative that every jurisdiction recognizes its severity and respond accordingly. Individuals who commit these offenses often pose an elevated risk not only to their victims but to public safety as a whole. To support this effort, we have developed different resources titled “What Judges Should Know About Non-Fatal Strangulation.” These tools provide valuable insights into state-specific laws, case law, bail considerations, relevant terminology, signs and symptoms, hidden dangers, key questions judges should consider in court proceedings and so much more.
Below, you’ll find the resources that have been created for the following states. We are actively working with additional states to expand this initiative and welcome partnerships to develop similar resources tailored to their jurisdictions. We encourage you to explore the materials below and invite you to reach out to us with any questions or interest in collaboration. If you’ve created any related resources of your own, we’d love for you to share them with us.
As always, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all those involved in supporting survivors of domestic violence and non-fatal strangulation. Thank you for all that you do to help victims of strangulation assault navigate through challenging and dangerous circumstances. Together, we can make a difference, one step at a time.
Always with great Hope,
Casey, Gael, Joe, Fernanda, Jess, and Jahlyssa
