Prayer

Seventh Sunday of Easter
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son
Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:
Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to
strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior
Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.  Amen.

Costa Joins Office of the Bishop
The Office of the Bishop is delighted to welcome its newest member of the staff, Rae Costa. As the Business Manager, she will handle diocesan properties and spaces, help Treasurer Peter Pereira with business and finance affairs, and also coordinate special events such as the Annual Meeting of Convention.

Prior to her new role, Rae was the Supply Chain Manager for Diamond Bakery, and also worked for Wilson Food Service.

"If the name sounds familiar," says Rae, "my better half is Deacon Steve Costa."  They currently worship at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Honolulu, but she has served as Senior/Bishop's Warden at St. Timothy's in Aiea for several years.

"I plan to bring both my work and church experiences to this new position," continues Rae. "I look forward to meeting you over the phone or when you stop by the office!"

Rae can be reached at (808) 536-7776, ext. 326, or by e-mail.

Farewell Faithful Servant Dot Shigemura
(The following is from an e-mail message by Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick that was released on May 12.)

Dot Shigemura died on Wednesday, May 3, after a long struggle with cancer. Many in the Diocese will know her as an active lay leader (including as Bishop's Warden) at St. Nicholas Church, Kapolei, and from various Diocesan governance groups (including the Standing Committee) and committees (including the Compensation Review Committee).  Dot was a woman of passionate faith with keen organizational and leadership skills.  Her father, the Rev. Richard Kim, was the Rector of Good Shepherd Church, Wailuku, from 1977 to 1981.  Dot is survived by her husband, Kelvin, and two sons, Schuyler and Drake.

Notes of condolence may be sent to:  2108 Puualii Place,  Honolulu, HI 96822

A Requiem Eucharist was celebrated in remembrance of Dot on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu.

ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Dot, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that she and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest eternal grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

A Call to Prayer, Fasting and Advocacy
Episcopal Presiding Bishop and ELCA Presiding Bishop Issue Joint Statement

[May 18, 2017]  Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have issued a joint statement calling for prayer, fasting and advocacy.

The statement,  For Such a Time as This: A Call to Prayer, Fasting, and Advocacy, calls for fasting on the 21 st of each month through December 2018, at which time the 115 th Congress will conclude.

The 21st of each month is targeted because by that time each month, 90% of SNAP (formerly food stamp) benefits have been used, thereby causing the last week of the month as the hungry week in America.
The fast will launch with a group of national and local leaders doing a three-day fast together May 21-23. These leaders include Presiding Bishop Curry, Presiding Bishop Eaton, and leadership throughout the Episcopal Church.

Bishop of Manchester Offers Prayers After Suicide Attack
(May 23, 2015 - Anglican Communion News Service) The Bishop of Manchester, David Walker, has issued the following statement after the attack at a concert venue in Manchester in northern England in which twenty two people were killed and fifty nine injured:

"Today is a day to mourn the dead, to pray with their families and with the injured, and to reaffirm our determination that those who murder and maim will never defeat us.

Like other great cities, Manchester is an obvious target for terrorists to choose. What makes this latest atrocity particularly dreadful is the deliberate choice of a concert known to attract very young fans. Many lives will be lived out, impacted by this tragedy for long years to come. Others have had decades of life ripped away from them.

There is a proper anger and rage in the face of events like this. Our challenge will be to direct that rage and anger to be a force for good. We will rally around the victims and their families. We will unite across our diversity, drawing close especially to any that the terrorists would seek to separate us from. And we will rebuild and repair the damage to our city, as we have done before.

Today is a day to mourn, and I would ask churches throughout Greater Manchester and beyond to make space and time for people who wish to come into their buildings and  pray.  But today is also a day to begin our response. A response that will crush terrorism not by violence but by the power of love. A love which Christians celebrate especially now in Eastertide.
