Yearbook Distribution
For the Yearbook Audience in the Bellaire HS Community, from Balfour:
Thank you for supporting Bellaire High School Publications. We hope you will enjoy your copy of the 2023 Carillon yearbook.
Balfour Publishing regrets the plant manufacturing error that occurred on a number of copies in the 2023 Carillon. Our quality assurance teams are investigating and taking quick corrective action to replace the effected copies as soon as possible.
We are deeply sorry that this causes some students a delay in receiving their yearbook. We ensure that we will correct the problem and provide a new copy before the end of the semester.
We would also like to reiterate that the Carillion staff is not responsible for the manufacturing errors. We apologize and hope that this will not detract the readers from appreciating the hard work of the student journalists who produced this beautiful publication.
Janey Garrison
Director of Customer Service, Balfour &Co Dallas
From the yearbook adviser Andrea Negri:
If your book is affected by the improper sewing/binding and has not been returned, please email andrea.negri@houstonisd.org. We are trying to get an accurate count of how many books are affected as well as try to find a way to fix any books that have not been returned to the company for repair.

Library Update
The past two weeks have been very busy! Last week Ms. Carpenter was representing Bellaire High School and HISD at the Texas Library Association annual conference. She presented on "Transforming Reporting for Advocacy: Visualizing Data and the Future" and was a speaker and moderator on a panel called "Impostor Syndrome: You got the Job, Now Own it!" We have been super busy with testing, but kids have been checking out books and using library resources. Today, the Best Buddies club came in to use the Makerspace and library resources to conduct a friendship bracelet workshop!
Important dates:
May 8th - Bellaire Alumni Author Speaker series happening open to all students. Michael Lewis, M.D is a 1960 Bellaire HS graduate, member of the National Forensic league (Debate), track star, doctor, photographer, and author. He has published 5 books: 3 books featuring his photography, and 2 books featuring life lessons learned from his various experiences from Bellaire to working with the '97 NBA Chicago Bulls Championship team as their orthopedic surgeon.
May 17th is the due date for ALL library books. We will continue checking out books but will begin collecting them on May 17th to prepare for the end of the school year. This will impact eligibility for final exam exemptions. Students can check their email to see what books they have out or are overdue.

Host Family Needed for Exchange Student
The Bellaire community and the Council for International Educational Exchange are looking for two local families to host Gabriela and Raul, two exchange students from Spain, who will be arriving to Texas in August. Gabriela and Raul are both recipients of prestigious scholarships through the Fundación Armando Ortega in Spain and were selected because of merit as well as financial need. The acceptance rate for this scholarship is 3.8% out of the 10,500 students who applied in the last academic year.
Gabriela is 16 and writes, “I am a cheerful, outgoing, hard-working, and kind girl. I worry a lot about everyone around me, if they are okay, or need something. I always try to make everybody smile. I play the violin and the piano. I love music. My other hobbies are all related to art. When going out with my friends, or my family I like to go to nature. I enjoy learning (especially if it is things related to sciences, music, or languages) and I get good grades. I am interested in the environment, animals (I love them!), and plants. My favorite sports include basketball and cycling.”
Raul is 15 and writes, “People say I’m a loyal, kind, and funny person. Once I get to know people and become comfortable around them, I can be very talkative. In my free time I usually hang out with friends, and while I’m alone I mostly enjoy drawing and listening to music. I also like sports, and I do track and field and go hiking, but I would love to try new sports and activities such as baseball or gymnastics in the US. I like to help people in need so I’m looking forward to trying volunteering while I’m in the US. I love animals. I would love to show my culture to my host family by, for example, cooking typical Spanish meals for them.”
If your family might be interested in welcoming either of these students into your home, please reach out to Ms. Chapman (echapman@houstonisd.org) or Mr. Rossow (mrossow@houstonisd.org).
