Welcome Back
We can't wait to welcome students back to campus on Monday! This edition of the E-News contains a lot of information for our families. We encourage you to read through it to clarify any questions you might have. We will utilize our Remind Groups to send timely reminders throughout the next few weeks. We also encourage you to follow us on Instagram or Twitter @BellarieHIgh #CardinalProud
Arrival and Dismissal
Arrival
Next week please give yourself plenty of time when headed to campus as we anticipate traffic patterns to be very heavy. Please review the campus map carefully. Students can be dropped off at the drop-off zone between the Parking Garage and Bus Lane. Sidewalks are paved all along S. Rice and Maple so that students can walk up to the school. Students may enter the building through the tw0 entrances marked on the map. Doors will open daily at 8:00 am. After 8:30 am the only entrance students will be able to enter through is the Main Street entrance located off of S. Rice..

Parents, please do not attempt to pull into the parking garage to drop off a student. Parking in the garage is by permit only.

Dismissal
Students may exit the building through the doors to the main courtyard or the main entrance. Dismissal is at 4:10 pm. Please arrange a pickup location with your child prior to drop off.
Student Schedules
Students will receive their schedule for the first day of school via their HISD email account on Sunday. PowerSchools is also scheduled to be turned on for students on Sunday. Students should report to their 2nd period class on Monday morning. If a student's schedule is different from what they picked up during early check-in they should follow the schedule that is emailed to them and visible in PowerSchools.
Course Change Requests
BHS Counselors have been working very hard to get student schedules ready for the first day of school! We have been told that schedules will be available on the PowerSchool app on Sunday, 8/27/2023. They will also be emailed to all students through their HISD email on that day. The green draft copy of the schedule given out at student pick up may be different due to schedule changes and therefore will be invalid. Students are expected to follow the schedule on the Power School app and what is emailed to them, unless notified by their Counselor that a change has been made.

If a student notices an error on their schedule (such as a course they already have credit for or have a missing class period), please submit a schedule change to the schedule change link. Students should not submit change requests to their Counselors by email or phone. Counselors cannot honor schedule change requests for specific teachers or specific class periods. We cannot overload classes to accommodate schedule change requests. Specialty courses such as advanced fine arts or athletics must first be approved by the teacher or coach. Schedule change requests can be submitted up to the 15th day of school, September 18, 2023. Approval to join a new course is based on space availability and priority. When making schedule changes, Counselors do attempt to cause the least disruption to the schedule as they can. However, that is not always possible. By submitting the schedule change or level change form, you are authorizing your counselor to change your entire schedule if necessary (including teacher changes) to accommodate your requests. Keep in mind that prerequisites must be met prior to enrollment in a course.

The level change window is: September 18-September 29, 2023 (Example- A student wants to drop HADV World Geography and add Academic World Geography.)
No level changes will occur in the first 3 weeks of school, with exceptions listed below. Once the level change window is open, changes can occur until the end of the first six weeks. Also, there will be no level changes the days teachers are verifying grades for the first six weeks. Students are still able to turn in the level change form during that time and it will be applied to the second six weeks, once grades are published.
 Exceptions:
1. The incorrect level was placed onto your schedule. (You did not request the level.)
2. You are a new student to BHS (any grade level) in the 2023-2024 school year.
3. If a student is recommended to move up a level, parent approval is required.
4. To be considered for a level change after September 29th, it must be reviewed and approved by a committee consisting of the Counselor, AP or Dean, parent, and teacher.

If you have any questions, please email your Counselor. There may be a longer response time during this busy time of the school year. We appreciate your patience. Your student’s Counselor’s name and email is located here.
Bus Routes
Please click here to see bus transportation information regarding bus route numbers and bus stops.  Please do not call and request for bus transportation as it is difficult to get all the information needed through a voicemail. Requests will not be processed by voicemail. If you have requested using the link on our website, please know that the HISD Transportation Department takes 10 business days to process any requests. Be sure you have a backup plan for transportation next week.

For additional information about transportation or to request transportation. Click here.

Laptops
If a student did not pick up their laptop during early check-in, they weill have an opportunity to pick up their laptop Tuesday, August 29 through their English class. There is not a fee this year to check out a laptop; only the form needs to be submitted. Download a Laptop Agreement Form here.

Textbook Distribution
Textbooks will be distributed during Cardinal Hour Tuesday- Firday next week in room 1700.
Student IDs
New IDs have been printed this year for all students. There is a new design this year, so previous years’ IDs cannot be reused.

Last year’s school photos will be used for student ID's .

Students that did not pick their ID up during early check-in can pick it up during Cardinal Hour on Main Street. Seniors that are waiting for home lunch permits to be printed on their IDs can check the pick up tables to see if their ID has been reprinted. Students that do not have pictures in our system should scan the QR code on the right and a new email request will be sent to them to upload a photo. Students should check their SPAM if they do not see the email.

We know it is going to take a few days to get all of the IDs out.

Senior Home Lunch Permits
Twelfth-grade students may leave Bellaire High School campus during the lunch hour only if parent(s) grant written permission and students meet all requirements. Failure of students to abide by the policy and maintain good standing as a student will result in the privilege being revoked. A new ID will be issued once approval is granted.

Students must meet the following conditions in order to receive the privilege of leaving campus at lunchtime.
  • 5 or less absences in any period
  • No level III discipline violations.
  • No more than 5 tardies in any class
  • No failing cycle grades in any class.

The following information is included on the Home Lunch Permit Request:
My son/daughter has my permission to eat lunch at home. I relieve the Houston Independent School District of all responsibility for his/her safety. All HISD rules of conduct apply during this interim of the day. I understand that if my child goes to lunch any place other than home, he/she will be in violation of Houston and Harris County’s daytime curfew which may result in a citation being issued by the police if the student is apprehended.

I have reviewed the school conditions above for maintaining this privilege and agree that the Assistant Principal will terminate the permit at any time if my child does not continue to meet these conditions. If a student’s home lunch permit is revoked, another application must be completed the following semester to have the privilege reinstated once it is terminated. A new student ID must be purchased for $5.00 if the privilege is terminated and my home lunch ID turned in to the school administration.
