Spotlight on CTE
Celebrating CTE Month

This week we are highlighting the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources program of study. There are two pathways of study in this program: Animal Science and Plant Science. The courses for the Animal Science are Principles of Agriculture, Small Animal Management/Equine Science, Livestock Production and Advanced Animal Science. The Plant Science pathway includes Principles of Agriculture, Floral Design, Advanced Floral Design, and Advanced Plant & Soil Science. This pathway provides students with the opportunity to earn a certification in Texas Floral Design.

Participation in the Ag program allows students to experience a variety of different hands-on learning opportunities.

Last semester, students in the Principles of Agriculture classes visited HISD’s Food and Agriculture Literacy Center at Mykawa Farm. The students participated in planting fruit trees and other food production crops. Students also experienced farm-to-plate firsthand by making salads and homemade pickles with crops harvested at the farm.

At this year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, senior Jake Haegner will be showing his Calf Scramble steer. Haegner was able to purchase the steer with the money he won during last year’s Houston Livestock Show Calf Scramble. Haegner is in the Advanced Animal Science class and will earn the Business and Industry endorsement for completing all four courses in the Animal Science pathway. Junior Camryn Suminski will be participating in this year’s calf scramble at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and is enrolled in the Livestock Production class.

The Bellaire FFA will host the Bellaire FFA Show and Livestock Auction on April 13th and 15th. This year there are 20 students participating in the event.
  • Livestock Show: Thursday, April 13th at 5:00 p.m.
  • Buyer’s Lunch: Saturday, April 15th at 11:30 a.m.
  • Silent Auction: Saturday, April 15th at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Live Animal Auction: Saturday, April 15th begins at 1:00 p.m.

The show and auction are located at the Bellaire Agriculture Facility, 11611 Riceville School Road, Houston, TX 77071. This event is open to the public.

To learn more, you can follow the Ag program on Instagram @bellaire_ffa. Or contact Mr. Llyod, Ms. Abson, Ms. Collier, or Ms. Andrews for more information.

Round 2 of the Senior Parking Lottery
The Senior Parking Lot Lottery will accept student entries until February 20th at 4:00 pm. Only students with a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and access to a car they will drive to school may enter their name in the parking lot lottery. The fee for parking spaces is $75.
Only students that are classified as Seniors are eligible to enter the lottery. This means you must have earned 18 or more credits.
The week of February 20th, students will be notified of lottery results by email. (Results of the lottery will be shared via HISD student email addresses.) The spots are non-transferrable. You MAY NOT give or sell your spot to anyone. If you decline your spot, it will be given to someone on the waiting list.
Payment and contract instructions will be sent to students via their HISD email account. Students that are selected in the lottery will submit their $75 payment via School Pay and keep a copy of their receipt, a copy of their insurance, and driver's license to Ms. Frank in the Main Office.
If you have any questions, please email Ms. Frank.
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Each February, young adults and educators work to raise awareness and focus on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts. This year’s theme for TDVAM is “Be About It”, where the focus is to amplify the voices of teens and young adults and promote positive and healthy relationships. Wondering how you can get involved?
  • Talk about the issue – discuss the warning signs of dating abuse and create a positive connection to the issue such as characteristics of healthy relationships
  • Become an ambassador – That’s Not Cool Ambassador Program is an opportunity for teens to raise awareness with friends, family, and the community through monthly challenges
  • Know how to get help – check out the list of resources available in Houston, connect to the National Dating Abuse Helpline, and talk to your counselor or trusted adult at Bellaire
"Help Us Grow" Backyard Soiree

Library Update
This week during Cardinal Hour the library hosted 3D Printing Training. This was a success- more than 30 students gave up some of their time during Cardinal hour to learn the basics of Tinkercad- an online education friendly AutoCad design platform and learn about our Makerbot Replicator + (5th gen) 3D printer. We walked through the basics of Tinkercad to create a design, and the different parts of the printer for troubleshooting and operation. We also went through the procedures of printing so that all students can have access and the printer would not be printing while the Makerspace is used for teaching.
The principal, Mr. Niggli, hosted a "Coffee with the Principal" on Thursday morning that included several community members and parents. We even had the Bellaire Jazz band come play! This gave parents and community members the opportunity to see what the library has to offer and browse the space.
Today, we added 55 new books to the collection for free from Junior Library Guild. Junior Library Guild is a book vendor that sends books each month through a subscription service- these books are chosen by the librarian so that we can get the newest titles as quickly as possible. By renewing and setting up our library with their service, we got a coupon for 55 free titles picked by the librarian for our collection. Your students can look for our Yellow new Books display cart that features diverse characters across all genres.
Lastly, Ms. Carpenter was nominated by the Bellaire Admin and staff to be put up for the HISD District Librarian of the Year/Library Program of the Year. I am beyond humbled to be nominated for this award. Being the librarian at Bellaire High School and opening this new library space is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Thank you to all of those in the Bellaire Community that support the library and all of our efforts to create a safe, welcoming space that provides access to information for all. Libraries are for everyone!
