Remix Judaism
Thursday August 20
at 6:15 PM
right after evening minyan
Please mark your calendars for a very special virtual guest speaker on Thursday August 20. Roberta Kwall, professor of law at DePaul University and a writer on Jewish topics, will be speaking about her new book Remix Judaism: Preserving Tradition in a Diverse World after our 6 PM services. She will address us for 30 minutes and take questions for 30 minutes. It is a fascinating book on where American Jews are today in fast changing world.

"The evidence is pretty clear that most American Jews do not believe strict religious observance is fundamental to their Jewish identity. The 2013 Pew Report, the most recent comprehensive study of the American Jewish community, found that 'observing Jewish law' was 'essential to Jewish identity' for only 19 percent of the respondents. But if observing the laws of Jewish religion is not important to the vast majority of American Jews, how would they define their Jewish identity?"
If you are interested in knowing how Jews today define their identity, come join our discussion with Dr. Kwall, professor of law at DePaul University and author of a number of books on Jewish life and thought.

To participate in this program, please email Rabbi Friedland at [email protected] and he will provide the digital link.

A Program and a Book – All Free to You!
The Kurt and Tessye Simon Foundation is excited to present a special treat in observance of the first of the chagim (festivals) for the coming year, Sukkot. We will be offering a program featuring author Abigail Pogrebin speaking about her recently published book, My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew.

The program will be presented via Zoom on Sunday October 4 at 10 am.

Journalist Abigail Pogrebin made it her mission to research, observe, and write about every Jewish holiday on the calendar -- without skipping one festival or fast. A much-expanded version of her popular series for the Forward, her new book, chronicles what she learned and how it changed her -- as a Jew, a parent, a wife, a citizen, and a Jewish communal leader. My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays; One Wondering Jew, was a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award. The Simon Foundation will make copies of the book available to anyone interested who reserves a copy, one per household, no later than August 26.

You can reserve your copy at [email protected]. Information about pick-up or delivery will be provided.

Pogrebin, a former Emmy-nominated producer for 60 Minutes, also wrote the bestselling Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk about Being Jewish, which was adapted for the Off-Broadway stage. Her Tablet Magazine’s podcast, "Parsha in Progress," with Rabbi Dov Linzer, covered the entire Torah in ten-minute segments and can be accessed on iTunes. She has been published in Newsweek, Tablet, The Forward, The Daily Beast and many other publications.
The link for the Zoom will be distributed to those who RSVP.
