Library Update
So far in May we have over 130+ check outs and we have been very busy with classes in the library. US History classes have been creating artifacts for a part of their final project. We have seen everything from 3D helicopters, handmade puppets, buttons, and rocket ships! Ms. Carpenter has been having a wonderful time collaborating with Mr. Aranda, Ms. Lawrence, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Curtis (to come next week). Currently we have 313 books overdue - please encourage your student to return any books they have in their car, backpack, closet, etc. Students are not charged late/ overdue fees for books, but if a book has been lost they will be charged the replacement price or be asked to bring a replacement copy in good condition.
Important dates:
May 17th is the due date for ALL library books. We will continue checking out books, but will begin collecting them on May 17th to prepare for the end of the school year. This will impact eligibility for final exam exemptions. Students can check their email to see what books they have out or overdue.

Host Family Needed for Exchange Student
The Bellaire community and the Council for International Educational Exchange are looking for two local families to host Gabriela and Raul, two exchange students from Spain, who will be arriving to Texas in August. Gabriela and Raul are both recipients of prestigious scholarships through the Fundación Armando Ortega in Spain and were selected because of merit as well as financial need. The acceptance rate for this scholarship is 3.8% out of the 10,500 students who applied in the last academic year.
Gabriela is 16 and writes, “I am a cheerful, outgoing, hard-working, and kind girl. I worry a lot about everyone around me, if they are okay, or need something. I always try to make everybody smile. I play the violin and the piano. I love music. My other hobbies are all related to art. When going out with my friends, or my family I like to go to nature. I enjoy learning (especially if it is things related to sciences, music, or languages) and I get good grades. I am interested in the environment, animals (I love them!), and plants. My favorite sports include basketball and cycling.”
Raul is 15 and writes, “People say I’m a loyal, kind, and funny person. Once I get to know people and become comfortable around them, I can be very talkative. In my free time I usually hang out with friends, and while I’m alone I mostly enjoy drawing and listening to music. I also like sports, and I do track and field and go hiking, but I would love to try new sports and activities such as baseball or gymnastics in the US. I like to help people in need so I’m looking forward to trying volunteering while I’m in the US. I love animals. I would love to show my culture to my host family by, for example, cooking typical Spanish meals for them.”
If your family might be interested in welcoming either of these students into your home, please reach out to Ms. Chapman (echapman@houstonisd.org) or Mr. Rossow (mrossow@houstonisd.org).
