HB 114 - New Policy Change
We would like to notify you of an important new policy change that has been passed by the 88th Texas Legislature and will be taking effect immediately in our district on September 1st, 2023. House Bill 114 (HB 114) has been enacted to respond to the increasing concerns around e-cigarettes, vaping, marijuana, and THC-related products among our youth. The Bill mandates that any student found in possession of, under the influence of, selling, gifting, or delivering these substances within a 300-feet radius of any school premises will be immediately removed and placed in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP). You can access the full version of the Bill here: https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/billtext/pdf/HB00114F.pdf. Please discuss the implications of this new law with your children, emphasizing the importance of adhering to school policies and laws for their own educational success and for the betterment of the school community.

Student IDs
We have just under 200 students who have not submitted a picture for their student ID. Students who do not have an ID yet should check their HISD email for an email with instructions on how to upload a picture. The email was sent by Ms. Campbell. Beginning next week, all students will be required to have their ID on, out, and visible at all times while on campus. Students who do not have IDs will be required to get a temporary ID for $1.
Seniors who are waiting for home lunch permits to be printed on their IDs can check the pickup tables to see if their ID has been reprinted. We have students who have requested home lunch permits who have not had their requests verified with a parent. Students IDs will not be reprinted until parent verification has been received by the school.

Course Change Requests
BHS Counselors have been working very hard to get student schedules ready for the first day of school! We have been told that schedules will be available on the PowerSchool app on Sunday, 8/27/2023. They will also be emailed to all students through their HISD email on that day. The green draft copy of the schedule given out at student pick-up may be different due to schedule changes and, therefore will be invalid. Students are expected to follow the schedule on the Power School app and what is emailed to them unless notified by their Counselor that a change has been made.
If a student notices an error on their schedule (such as a course they already have credit for or have a missing class period), please submit a schedule change to the schedule change link. Students should not submit change requests to their Counselors by email or phone. Counselors cannot honor schedule change requests for specific teachers or specific class periods. We cannot overload classes to accommodate schedule change requests. Specialty courses such as advanced fine arts or athletics must first be approved by the teacher or coach. Schedule change requests can be submitted up to the 15th day of school, September 18, 2023. Approval to join a new course is based on space availability and priority. When making schedule changes, Counselors do attempt to cause the least disruption to the schedule as they can. However, that is not always possible. By submitting the schedule change or level change form, you are authorizing your counselor to change your entire schedule if necessary (including teacher changes) to accommodate your requests. Keep in mind that prerequisites must be met prior to enrollment in a course.
The level change window is: September 18-September 29, 2023 (Example- A student wants to drop HADV World Geography and add Academic World Geography.)
No level changes will occur in the first three weeks of school, with the exceptions listed below. Once the level change window is open, changes can occur until the end of the first six weeks. Also, there will be no level changes on the days teachers are verifying grades for the first six weeks. Students are still able to turn in the level change form during that time, and it will be applied to the second six weeks once grades are published.
Exceptions:
1. The incorrect level was placed on your schedule. (You did not request the level.)
2. You are a new student to BHS (any grade level) in the 2023-2024 school year.
3. If a student is recommended to move up a level, parent approval is required.
4. To be considered for a level change after September 29th, it must be reviewed and approved by a committee consisting of the Counselor, AP or Dean, parent, and teacher.
If you have any questions, please email your Counselor. There may be a longer response time during this busy time of the school year. We appreciate your patience. Your student’s Counselor’s name and email is located here.

Hello Bellaire Community!
One of my goals for the year is to further share statistics and programs happening in our library. I plan to continue sharing our weekly statistics and successes weekly through the Bellaire eNews platform.
If you are new to Bellaire or did not previously get the newsletter emails, you can find the library highlights each week in an infographic style and a brief summary. These weekly stats can include how many books were checked out that week, upcoming programming to know about, important dates and information, as well as shoutouts to teachers, students, and community members who are actively involved in the library.
This year, I will also bring you a Monthly Highlights Infographic. These infographics will always include the same information and statistics so you can see how the library program is growing or changing throughout the school year. We hope that these numbers and statistics will help our staff, students, and community see the impact a quality school library program has on our students.
Kaitlyn Carpenter
Bellaire HS Librarian
If you are #cardinalproud of the library or impressed by the library’s impact- please share this email with your family, friends, and social media.
