A Time for Joy and Reflection

Welcome to December! It's a time of celebration; a time to give pause to where the year has gone and what we have accomplished. As we consider our achievements and prepare for the end of 2018, keep in mind that 2019 allows us another chance to fix our mistakes, to try again to reach our goals, and an opportunity to create memories of another year of goodness.

Embrace the last few weeks of this year. Plan to attend the many concerts and programs held at our schools during the month, and indulge in the spirit of the season.
It's the Law

As required by state regulations, physical and dental examinations are to be on file for students in certain grades. Physical Examination forms for kindergarten, sixth, and eleventh grades, and Dental Examination forms for kindergarten, third, and seventh grades are due by Friday, December 14th. Submit completed forms to your child's school nurse.

Introducing the Future Ready PA Index
NEW PDE RESOURCE AVAILABLE ONLINE NOW

The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently introduced the Future Ready PA Index, a new, one-stop location for comprehensive information and data on student and school performance.

The Future Ready PA Index highlights academic proficiency, or how students are mastering state standards required for graduation. The indicators also highlight how students are progressing to college or career readiness following high school graduation.

The index contains more than simply test scores; indicators include growth, achievement, and other data by student group, including economically disadvantaged students, English Learners, students receiving special education services, and racial and ethnic groups.

Encore!

Dallastown Area High School musicians Eva Wolfe and Joel Staub received chairs in the 2019 All-East Orchestra on oboe and violin, respectively, and will perform at the 2019 PMEA/NAfME Eastern Division Conference in April in Pittsburgh, PA. This year's conference theme of Innovation, Access, and Insights focuses on how in today's rapidly changing world, the need for quality music education for all has never been more vital.

Twenty-nine Dallastown Area School District students performed with the York Youth Symphony Orchestra recently, including selections from Bernstein's West Side Story and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op 95, From the New World. These include nine brass, woodwind, and percussion students from the band, four of whom hold principal positions in their respective sections.
DAIS and DAMS Backpack Programs

Similar to the elementary backpack program, Dallastown Area Intermediate School and Dallastown Area Middle School also provide backpack programs. With the support of volunteers, and with donations from community agencies, churches, and others, assistance is provided to families in the Dallastown community encountering difficult economic circumstances.

For more information, contact your student's school.

A MESSAGE OF APPRECIATION

For years, Dallastown Area High School Volunteer Club advisor Pat McKinney's passion has been supporting our troops as they are away from their loved ones during the holidays. Pat may have retired, but her benevolence and desire carries on.

The Volunteer Club has again been overwhelmed by the outpour from members of the Dallastown family--teachers, secretaries, administrators, staff, and even a local scout troop--who have joined together to send holiday packages of appreciation to members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving away from home during the holiday season.

Letters were written by students and staff, and holiday snacks and gift items were gathered, then sent to the high school for packaging. More than 40 members of the Volunteer Club packed and sealed 114 very heavy boxes to be shipped to 30 soldiers whose names were provided by members of the staff and community, and include friends, family members, and former students.

Some packages included trees, complete with trimmings, and individually-wrapped gift items to ensure the holiday spirit while so far away. One creative classroom themed their box as a coffee bar, including everything from the Keurig coffee brewer to the stirrers to make that perfect cup o' Joe. Two dog-loving classrooms themed their collections on the War Dog K-9 units and their Military Working Dog Handlers.

By now, some of the packages have arrived and, already, soldiers have responded with gratitude. Thank you, Dallastown community, for your generosity, compassion, and willingness to give in this effort of appreciation. We extend a special thank you to the Buildings & Grounds crew who transported the boxes throughout the district, and to Postal Connections for their generous donation.
As the new Volunteer Club advisor, I will never forget the sincere hearts of the Dallastown family as we continue this annual tradition. Have a wonderful holiday season!
