This is How We Lockdown
In Dallastown Area School District, a lockdown is declared when the opinion of the administrator in charge or employee reacting to his/her environment perceives a situation that threatens the safety of students and staff, and/or requires all students and staff to remain in their classrooms or move to a secure area immediately.
A lockdown announcement will include the rationale for why the lockdown is being called. A sample lockdown announcement may include:
- "Your attention please: There is a lockdown in our building due to (cite reason why the lockdown is being called). All individuals in the building are to remain in, or report to, the nearest securable area and lockdown."
Triggers for a lockdown may include:
- an announcement made via the PA system;
- a staff member directs the lockdown in person;
- a threat occurring outside of the building;
- a non-threatening circumstance warrants keeping individuals away from areas (i.e., a medical emergency or disturbance).
This communication will allow students, teachers, and administrators to respond in a controlled manner to the situation at hand. Should further instructions be required, they will be included in the announcement. The most common lockdown will occur during medical incidents, such as when a hallway may need to be cleared to allow for emergency response personnel to tend to a medical situation.
