ALLIANCE FOR ANIMALS E-NEWS
February 2020
THE ZOR SHRINE CIRCUS IS COMING. THE ANIMALS NEED YOUR VOICE

It’s always icy and bitter cold when the circus hauls its elephants, tigers, camels, and other animals to Madison. It’s a nasty time of the year to protest outside, but every year people do because what the animals are going through is even nastier.

One bit of good news to warm our toes, fingers, and hearts this frigid time of year, is that this is (finally!) the last year elephants will be forced to perform or be ridden.

Beginning next year Dane County’s ordinance banning their exhibition will finally take effect. The elephants will get a few days off, but the rest of the animals won’t, and so, we’ll be there too. We hope you will join us; give the animals a voice and share a toast to the elephants. C heck out our anti-circus PSA on WMTV in Madison.

HELP US PROTEST AND CELEBRATE

Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 3:30 pm

Join us just before the very last show, which will be the last time that elephants will be forced to perform in Dane County. We will meet in front of the Alliant Energy Center where we will protest the use of wild animals in circuses with a large banner for all attendees to see.

At that time we will also hold an Ordinance Celebration where we will celebrate the ban on elephants with a toast and a glass of bubbly. It has been a long time coming!

A BIT OF GOOD NEWS

The effort to ban the exhibition of all exotic animals in circuses is gaining steam across the US. For instance: here are a few quotes from the New York City Bar Association Animal Law Committee in their support for these bans:

“The tricks that animals are forced to perform in circuses, such as headstands and jumping through rings of fire, often involve physical coercion and abusive tactics. In particular, these are not behaviors animals would perform in nature and, in order to make animals perform them, some exhibitors use training methods that result in trauma, physical injury and, in extreme circumstances, death. Moreover, performances in front of an audience and the attendant loud noise and bright lights cause wild animals stress.”

Here is a list of all of the current bans on circuses using animals.
UW MADISON'S ANIMAL WELFARE VIOLATIONS

A set of links to six years of correspondence between UW-Madison and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare concerning violations of the Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals is now available on line. The records expose the harsh, brutal error-filled world of animal experimentation. See them all here.

TOSSING CHICKENS OFF A ROOF? WHO DOES THAT?

Answer: The mean, the bored, and the stupid

Pioneer Days is an annual event that happens in Ridgeland Wisconsin. During this event, the town gets together and throws hundreds of live chickens off of a roof and into a crowd of people where multiple people try to catch one bird. Injuries of birds who have been rescued from previous events included (but weren't limited to) cuts, abrasions, broken bones, necrotic body parts, and severe frostbite

Milwaukee Animal Save is planning a protest in Ridgeland. The event starts at 11:00 am Saturday February 15. More info can be found at the Milwaukee Animal Save FaceBook page.

THANKS TO YOU MORE BILLBOARDS AND TV ADS

We are now an all-volunteer organization. As an all-volunteer organization our overhead is drastically lower, so your donations do much more. Essentially all of every dollar we receive can be used to make the animals’ voices louder.

Your donations have allowed us to increase the presence of our message across mainstream media. We have a television commercial running on the NBC affiliate in Madison focusing on the cruelty of animals in entertainment – just a few weeks before the circus comes to town.

We are running a pro-vegan TV ad on the NBC-affiliate in Milwaukee.

This summer we will have a billboard on I-94 heading into Milwaukee from Madison and another in Milwaukee proper during the Democratic convention, the Wisconsin state fair, and Summerfest. Zillions of people will be encouraged to think about animals and to adopt a vegan lifestyle.

Please give what you can to help us keep our messages in the public eye. Got an idea for an ad topic? Let us know. Click Donate today! Every donation helps!
