Sickle Stroke Screen: What Parents

and Caregivers Need to Know

Please be sure to share the below information on Sickle Stroke Screening

with patient families with Sickle Cell Disease.

Did you know it is important for your child to have a Sickle Stroke Screen EVERY YEAR?

What is a stroke?

  • A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, leaving brain tissue without oxygen or food. Brain cells can die within minutes. Children with sickle cell disease have a higher risk of stroke than those without the disease.

What can I do to prevent a stroke?

  • Doctors can test your child every year from ages 2 to 16 to measure the risk of a stroke.
  • The Sickle Stroke Screen, also known as a Transcranial Doppler (TCD), is a painless ultrasound used to measure the speed of blood flowing through blood vessels in the brain.

Please attend all of your child’s appointments and ask questions about Sickle Stroke Screen.

How do I know if my child is having a stroke?

  • Weakness in a body part, such as the leg, arm or even entire side of the body.
  • Trouble speaking normally
  • Severe headaches or dizziness
  • Different facial appearance than normal, such as an abnormal smile
  • Seizure
  • Call 911 immediately if you think your child is having a stroke
