Mike Warren Retires, Tom Shufflebarger Named New Children's of Alabama President and CEO
On June 1, Tom Shufflebarger assumed the role of president and chief executive officer of Children’s of Alabama after serving as chief operating officer and senior executive vice president. “I am honored to be named the next CEO of Children’s of Alabama,” Shufflebarger said. “It is a humbling experience to be part of the strong legacy of providing care for ill and injured children from throughout the region. As the past year has taught us, Children’s of Alabama stands ready to face the challenges of modern healthcare, while remaining firmly dedicated to providing the highest standards of care for our patients and their families.”
U.S. News & World Report Names Children’s of Alabama Among Best in Southeast and Nation
U.S. News & World Report has ranked Children’s of Alabama number one in the state, third in the southeast and among the nation’s best on its list of “Best Children’s Hospitals” for 2021-22. For 12 consecutive years, Children’s has been ranked in the top 50 programs in the United States. This year, Children’s was ranked in nine of the 10 pediatric specialties evaluated:

Dr. Kathy Monroe Named New Division Director of Emergency Medicine
On June 1, Dr. Kathy Monroe assumed the position of division director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine following Dr. Peter Glaeser's retirement. Dr. Monroe is a professor at UAB and has been medical director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine since 2010. She graduated from Walker College, Birmingham Southern College and the UAB School of Medicine. She completed her internship, residency and fellowship at UAB and has been on faculty since 1995. She is well known locally for her leadership and management in clinical operations and nationally for her leadership, mentorship, scholarship and advocacy in injury prevention. 
Mental Health Awareness Conference - The Effects of COVID-19: Now What? | July 16
The 8th Annual Mental Health Awareness Conference will be held via Zoom on Friday, July 16 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. This free conference will help us continue to address the effects and trends of COVID-19 as we slowly move back to “normal.” Topics include: Depression and Anxiety, Eating Disorders, Child Abuse and Mental Health Resources.
Cystic Fibrosis Newborn Screening Lunch & Learn | Aug. 11
The Cystic Fibrosis Center at Children's of Alabama and UAB considers primary care pediatricians essential in completing timely follow up when a baby has a positive CF screen. To support pediatricians' knowledge of the Alabama CF NBS, the CF Center is offering this virtual lunch & learn on Wednesday, August 11 from 1 - 2 p.m.
