Honeysuckle Removal Workday a Resounding Success
The recent Honeysuckle Removal Workday was a tremendous success, with 19 dedicated volunteers contributing their time and talents in a variety of roles to help improve Scott A. Lewis Park.
Volunteers were welcomed at the park pavilion, where they checked in, enjoyed breakfast, filled their water bottles, and were transported by golf cart to the work site.
The selected work area was ideal due to its level terrain and easy golf cart access. Located along the wooded trail overlooking Dardenne Creek, the site offers scenic views of the Blueway and Old Hickory's Golf Club across the water. A natural stairway leads from the overlook down to a sandbar-like area along the creek, where visitors can fish from the bank or pull over and dock a kayak while exploring the Blueway. This location sits approximately midway between the existing Woodlands Sports Park Blueway kayak launch and the proposed Cottleville Blueway launch, making it an ideal stop for paddlers to rest, enjoy lunch, or simply take in the scenery while visiting Scott A. Lewis Park.
While many volunteers were experienced in the honeysuckle removal process, several first-time participants were welcomed. After a brief safety and removal tutorial, new volunteers were paired with experienced team members, allowing everyone to contribute safely and effectively.
By the end of the morning, volunteers had cleared honeysuckle from several hundred linear feet of one of the densest sections of the wooded trail. The result is a more open, accessible hiking path that visitors will enjoy for years to come.
One of the day's most exciting discoveries was an extensive stand of the native Dutchman's Pipe Vine (Aristolochia macrophylla), an important host plant for the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly. Visitors wishing to see this remarkable native vine can find it growing along the left side of the mowed trail leading toward the Pet Adoption Center.
Projects like this demonstrate the tremendous impact volunteers can have on improving our parks while restoring native habitats for wildlife. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped make this workday another successful step toward enhancing Scott A. Lewis Park for both people and nature.

Litter Harms Wildlife: A reminder to use Trash and Recycling Containers when visiting City Parks
As more families and visitors enjoy our beautiful city parks this season, the City would like to remind everyone about the importance of properly disposing of litter and recyclables. Keeping parks clean not only helps maintain their beauty, but also protects local wildlife and the environment.
Trash left behind in parks can seriously harm animals. Birds, squirrels, turtles, fish, and other wildlife may mistake litter for food or become trapped in plastic bags, cans, fishing line, and other debris. Even small items like bottle caps or food wrappers can pose dangerous risks to animals and pollute waterways.
Visitors are encouraged to use the trash and recycling containers located throughout city parks. Taking a few extra moments to properly dispose of waste helps keep parks safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone.
Recycling also plays an important role in reducing waste and protecting natural resources. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and paper products placed in recycling bins can be reused instead of ending up in landfills or harming the environment.
The City appreciates the community’s help in keeping parks clean and preserving these shared spaces for future generations. Together, we can all make a positive impact by remembering one simple rule: pack it in, pack it out, or place it in the proper container.

Don't Feed Wildlife in City Parks
Feeding wildlife may seem harmless, but it can actually create serious problems for animals, parks, and the environment. The City would like to remind residents and visitors to avoid feeding ducks, geese, fish, turtles, and other wildlife in local parks — especially bread and other processed foods.
While animals may eagerly eat bread, it does not provide the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Regularly feeding bread to wildlife can lead to malnutrition, illness, and unnatural dependence on human food sources. Excess food left in ponds and lakes can also negatively impact water quality by increasing algae growth and pollution.
Another growing concern is the amount of litter being left behind from feeding wildlife. Bread bags, plastic packaging, and food containers are often discarded near lakes, trails, and park areas. This litter can harm animals that may become tangled in the plastic or accidentally ingest it. It also creates unnecessary cleanup efforts and takes away from the beauty of the parks for other visitors.
Feeding wildlife can also attract large groups of animals to one area, which may increase aggressive behavior, overcrowding, and sanitation concerns.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy wildlife from a respectful distance and help keep parks clean by properly disposing of all trash and recycling. By not feeding wildlife and picking up litter, everyone can help protect local animals and preserve the natural beauty of our parks for future generations.
