"The Four Tendencies" is a personality profile framework to help you understand how you and the people around you deal with their outer and inner expectations, so you can better manage your life, work and relationships. Knowing your tendency will also help you be more successful if you are endeavoring on taking on a new prayer practice, study, or any new habit.
Ellen will be teaching about this framework for three Sundays after the
10am service in the Kensington Compass Center. All are welcome! Feel free to invite friends!

From Anne Lamott, the New York Times-bestselling author of Help, Thanks, Wow, comes the book we need from her now: How to bring hope back into our lives. Fantastic inspiration for the new year.
"I am stockpiling antibiotics for the Apocalypse, even as I await the blossoming of paperwhites on the windowsill in the kitchen," Anne Lamott admits at the beginning of Almost Everything. Despair and uncertainty surround us: in the news, in our families, and in ourselves. But even when life is at its bleakest-when we are, as she puts it, "doomed, stunned, exhausted, and over-caffeinated"-the seeds of rejuvenation are at hand. "All truth is paradox," Lamott writes, "and this turns out to be a reason for hope. If you arrive at a place in life that is miserable, it will change." That is the time when we must pledge not to give up but "to do what Wendell Berry wrote: 'Be joyful, though you have considered all the facts.'"
In this profound and funny book, Lamott calls for each of us to rediscover the nuggets of hope and wisdom that are buried within us that can make life sweeter than we ever imagined. Divided into short chapters that explore life's essential truths, Almost Everything pinpoints these moments of insight as it shines an encouraging light forward.
For our first meeting on March 12th we will be discussing chapter 1-3.
I will hand out a discussion schedule at our first meeting.
Hope to see you there! Ellen+

Saint of the Week: Matthias the Apostle
24 February NT
Matthias
(died c. 80 AD) was, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the apostle chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas' betrayal of Jesus and his subsequent suicide. His calling as an apostle is unique, in that his appointment was not made personally by Jesus, who had already ascended into heaven, and it was also made before the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the early Church.
There is no mention of a Matthias among the lists of disciples or followers of Jesus in the three synoptic gospels, but according to Acts, he had been with Jesus from his baptism by John until his Ascension.
In the days following, Peter proposed that the assembled disciples, who numbered about one hundred and twenty, nominate two men to replace Judas. They chose Joseph and Matthias. Then they prayed, "Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all [men], shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place." Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Matthias was present with the other apostles at Pentecost.

DVOŘÁK & PÄRT MASTERPIECESFor our Classical concert, we will be performing Dvořák & Pärt Masterpieces. Leading off our performance will be Pärt's "Salve Regina" (Hail, Queen), which was originally composed in 2001 for choir and organ. In 2011, Pärt arranged the composition for choir, celesta and string orchestra for the celebration of 150 years of Italian unity. The second half of our concert will feature Dvořák's "Mass in D Major" which was originally intended for organ, solo voices and a small choir. The work was given its final shape in 1892 when Dvořák arranged his Mass for a symphony orchestra.
