Epiphany Header

February 6, 2020 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Theological Significance of Epiphany

As with most aspects of the Christian liturgical calendar, Epiphany has theological significance as a teaching tool in the church. The Wise Men or Magi who brought gifts to the infant Jesus were the first Gentiles to acknowledge Jesus as "King" and so were the first to "show" or "reveal" Jesus to a wider world as the incarnate Christ. This act of worship by the Magi, which corresponded to Simeon's blessing that this child Jesus would be "a light for revelation to the Gentiles" (Luke 2:32), was one of the first indications that Jesus came for all people, of all nations, of all races, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited to only a few.

The day is now observed as a time of focusing on the mission of the church in reaching others by "showing" Jesus as the Savior of all people. It is also a time of focusing on Christian brotherhood and fellowship, especially in healing the divisions of prejudice and bigotry that we all too often create between God's children.

Community Outreach
The Animals of Australia need our HELP!

About half a billion animals have been killed in Australia's record- breaking wildfires so far this summer (it's summer there), and tens of thousands have been rescued. Animal hospitals are flooded with 4-legged burn victims and need our help keeping them comfortable while they recover.

An Australian woman named Morgan Leigh has started a Facebook Group with patterns for these items called Rescue Craft Co.  Can our community exercise its maker skills to support the animals of Australia?  Please gather with friends to make some items.  Refer to the Facebook page  Rescue Craft Co  for patterns.

Finished items can be dropped off at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 203 South Kensington in La Grange.
We have to move the deadline up to facilitate lower-cost shipping. Items will now be blessed on February 9th instead of the 16 th.

Donations to cover supplies and postage are gratefully accepted if you would like to contribute in that way towards this goal.  Donations for postage and supplies can be made HERE.

PS: Anyone who wants to cut, sew, stitch or enquire can find Kathleen and Dorren in Beaudway Hall between services next Sunday.
Also, we have been given a lot of micro fleece which can be used to insulate the hanging bags. If you want some for your sewing, let Dorren know and it will be provided.

Saint of the Week:
Agatha, Virgin and Martyr

5 February 251

Agatha (d. 251) was born of noble parentage in Sicily. When she refused the solicitations of the Roman counsel governor Quintianus, he had her imprisoned and tortured in order to get her to change her mind.

When that didn't work, she was sentenced to be burned at the stake, but an earthquake occurred and she was spared that fate, although her torture became even more henious. According to pious legend, she was miraculously visited by Saint Peter and an angel in the night and was healed.
Agatha was subsequently "rolled" on broken pieces of pottery and then also on live coals, and yet she stedfastly refused to sacrifice to the idols as requested.
Shortly after that ordeal, she died while praying.

She is the Patron Saint of her city, Cantania, bell founders, breast cancer victims and is also invoked against fires and earthquakes.

Agatha is remembered most vividly for her desire to place Christ above all else.

Notre Dame Concert Update

Ticket sales for the April 19th concerts are selling well, with over $12,000 sold so far. Help us make these concerts a huge success so we don't have to borrow as much! We are actively soliciting Corporate/Business/Private sponsors to pay for the choir expense. Sponsors will receive some tickets, and get advertising/recognition space in the programs and in the church if so desired! Please consider sponsoring or asking your neighbors' and friends' businesses to buy ad space that reaches our 600+ concert attendees! Coupons, discounts, rebates and well wishes from local businesses do encourage concert attendees to patronize these establishments.

Contact Dan or Stan or Kathleen or Judy for a Notre Dame Sponsor Letter if you don't see one on the table in the hallway. (We are also looking for Ronnie Rice/El Rando program sponsors starting at $100) Law firms, dentists, investment firms, real estate offices, car dealers and jewelers are some good candidates.

Thank you!
