DEW Open Plate Offering Sunday

Traditionally, the open plate offering on a Sunday in June benefits the David E. Weaver IV Outreach Endowment Fund. This year that will be Sunday, June 19th, as we remember the life and legacy of David.
For newer members of our church family, David E. Weaver IV was the son of our former Rector David E. Weaver III and his late wife Sally who, along with his sister Rachel and her family, have been long time members of Emmanuel. As his Dad was with us for 20 years, David grew up in our community. He was an amazing young man and passed away in 2003. The fund continues to grow as it honors David’s memory and shares his legacy by enriching the lives of underserved youth in the Chicagoland area. The committee has received a number of applications which will be reviewed soon.

Garage Sale

Emmanuel will again be having our garage sale on August 26th and 27th. The garage sale has always been a great contributor to the parish budget and a fun time to work together as a community.

Please start saving items to be donated. We will begin accepting donations soon (we will let the parish know when the space is available). We encourage the following donations: Furniture in good condition, good quality housewares, working appliances, yard tools, rugs, puzzles, games, books, jewelry, linens, bikes, toys, tools, crafts and holiday decorations.

This year we are not accepting: Plush animals, clothes, shoes, sets of china, dolls, ice skates, sports shoes of any kind, helmets, skis, entertainment centers, TVs, stereo equipment, and large bookcases.

Thank you, in advance, for your support of this important Emmanuel Ministry. Please contact Penny L at (708) 275-5028 or Ellen B at (708) 354-5847 with any questions.

Pray for those who have been commended to our prayers:

For the Sick: Michael, Susan, Andrew, Mike, Jeff, Kurt, Christiana and John, Steve, Jim & Sue, Heather
For those in any other need: Bill, Kerry, Tom, Claire, Howard, Renée
For those who have died: none this week
Birthdays: Casey S, Ada D, Paul M, Gil R, Jay J, Cliff E
Anniversaries: Congratulations to Sue & Stan J on their 28th Wedding Anniversary!
O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. (BCP p. 395)
The Emmanuel Prayer List is kept in the Church Office and updated periodically. Call or email the Church Office to add someone to the list. For privacy, people will be listed by given name, and the reason for prayer will be kept generic.
Saint of the Week:

Basil the Great, Bishop, Theologian

14 June 379
stained glass window
Basil of Caesarea, also called Saint Basil the Great, was the Greek bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He was an influential theologian who supported the Nicene Creed and opposed the heresies of the early Christian church. His ability to balance his theological convictions with his political connections made Basil a powerful advocate for the Nicene position.

In addition to his work as a theologian, Basil was known for his care of the poor and underprivileged. Basil established guidelines for monastic life which focus on community life, liturgical prayer, and manual labour. Together with Pachomius, he is remembered as a father of communal monasticism in Eastern Christianity.

Basil died in 379, shortly after the death in battle of the Arian Valens removed the chief threat to the Nicene faith to which Basil had devoted his life. He was mourned by the entire city, and the weeping crowds at his funeral included Christians, Jews, and pagans.

He is counted (with the two Gregories) as one of the three Cappadocian Fathers, and (with Gregory of Nazianzus and John Chrysostom) as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs. In the West, he is reckoned (with Gregory of Nazianzus, John Chrysostom, and Athanasius) as one of the Four Greek (Eastern) Doctors of the Undivided Church

Short Takes

We would like to congratulate Toni Moon on her recent retirement. Toni is now devoting more time to fostering dogs and helping As Good as Gold, Golden Retriever Rescue. She is also enjoying spending a lot more time with her photography hobby, including taking photos for Oaken Acres Wildlife Center in Sycamore. She likewise hopes to enjoy a lot more time with family and friends.
