Garage Sale

Emmanuel's Annual Garage Sale will be held August 26-28th.
The garage sale has always been a great contributor to the parish budget and a fun time to work together as a community.
Garage Sale Help!
Thanks again to Anita, Ellen and Penny, our garage sale preparation is well under way. We will need volunteers to work the sale, help with set up and packing up afterwards on Sunday. If you are interested in helping, please call Ellen on (708) 354-5847. Thank you!

Donations are now welcome!

Please bring gently used donations to the church and leave them in the large classroom. We especially encourage housewares, quality furniture, working appliances, puzzles, yard tools, tools, games, toys, books, bikes, linens, rugs, decorations, holiday items, jewelry, and crafts.

We are not accepting sports equipment, exercise equipment, plush animals, clothes, TVs, entertainment centers, stereo systems, china cabinets, or large bookcases. (Please contact Penny L before bringing any large furniture items.)

Thank you, in advance, for your support of this important Emmanuel Ministry!

We look forward to a successful sale this year!

Items left in Kitchen:
for Garage Sale??

Anita has put some cake stands and other dishes that do not belong to Emmanuel and were left by folks from various events on the counter in the Memorial kitchen. Please claim them as soon as possible so that they do not get sold in the garage sale, which is now in full preparation.
Thank you 😊

Beds Plus Mentoring Update
We've been working with our BEDS Plus new mom and her two year old child since mid-May and this has been a wonderful experience for all of us. We have regular meetings with the BEDS Plus social worker and have accomplished the following:
  • Planted a garden in large pots brought from Emmanuel (tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, jalapenos, herbs and flowers). These are doing beautifully and are becoming ready to harvest.
  • Brought plastic chairs for her outdoor patio to make an inviting place to sit outside.
  • Purchased and installed a window air conditioner to help make the family more comfortable.
  • Took toys and clothes and a new stroller for her two-year old child and the baby that is due in December.
  • Walked with them to story time at the La Grange Farmer's Market. Showed her the La Grange downtown area.
Future Activities:
  • A cooking class at Emmanuel so she can learn recipes for all her vegetables and herbs.
  • Find a love seat and coordinating chairs to put in her small living room.
  • Hang pictures that have been donated.
If you would like to be involved, please contact Penny L at (708)275- 5028.
The Leader Shop has asked Emmanuel to help provide school supplies for needy children in the La Grange area.
Please bring your supplies to church by Sunday, August 14th so that we can deliver them to The Leader Shop for sorting well before their event on the 20th.

Please click on the stapler for more information.
Thank you for supporting this ministry!

Weed Wars continue...

A very big thank you to the Wacky Weeders Crew: Kim G, Kathy C, Carry Z, Sharman and Jim G, Kathleen V, and Susan R for their valiant efforts in combating the weeds and borders in the gardens! It is an ongoing effort at this time of year.
You are still most welcome to help us out on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 8pm. Our weeding parties will continue doing battle each Wednesday until we can declare victory over the weeds, or when the snow flies, whichever comes sooner. We won't just be weeding, but it will be the priority. Be sure to bring your garden hand tools, gloves, a kneeler and something to drink.

You can come anytime between 5:00pm and 8:00pm and stay as long as you like.
We hope you can join us. We could really use the help.
Thank you!
The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ

6 August NT
On August 6 we celebrate the occasion on which Christ, as He was beginning to teach His disciples that He must die and rise again, revealed Himself in shining splendor to Peter, James, and John. Moses and Elijah were present, and are taken to signify that the Law and the Prophets testify that Jesus is the promised Messiah. God the Father also proclaimed him as such, saying, "This is my Beloved Son. Listen to him." For a moment the veil is drawn aside, and men still on earth are permitted a glimpse of the heavenly reality, the glory of the Eternal Triune God.
In the East, the Festival of the Transfiguration has been celebrated since the late fourth century, and is one of the twelve great festivals of the East Orthodox calendar. In the West it was observed after the ninth century by some monastic orders, and in 1457 Pope Callistus III ordered its general observance. At the time of the Reformation, it was still felt in some countries to be a "recent innovation," and so was not immediately taken over into most Reformation calendars, but is now found on most calendars that have been revised in the twentieth century.
A recent tendency in the West is to commemorate the Transfiguration on the Sunday just before Lent, in accordance with the pattern found in the Synoptics, where Jesus is represented as beginning to speak of his forthcoming death just about the time of the Transfiguration, so that it forms a fitting transition between the Epiphany season, in which Christ makes himself known, and the Lenten season, in which he prepares the disciples for what lies ahead. Whether observing the Transfiguration then will affect the observation of it on 6 August remains to be seen.
O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever.
