Anniversary Celebration of the Village Movement
Northeast Village PDX and Hollywood Senior Center invite you to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Beacon Hill Village and the Village Movement with Keynote Speaker Dr. Atul Gawande, In a Live Video Broadcast.
Dr. Gawande is the author of the seminal book Being Mortal. He will speak about the value of having choices and being part of community for people who choose to age in place.

NE Village Receives Grant Dollars
|
|
When it comes to grants and donations, NE Village has been generously gifted in recent months. Several charitable organizations have financially backed the aging-in-place movement by awarding funds to Villages NW, the hub organization for the seven villages operating in the Portland-Vancouver area. In addition to fundraising, Villages NW provides 501 (c)(3) nonprofit tax-exempt status to the spoke villages.
Three foundations -
Kaiser Permanente Northwest, the
Holzman Foundation and the
OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation - plus an
anonymous donor contributed a total of $28,000 to further village growth and development.
NE Village's share of the money is $3,680, which Village leadership can spend at its discretion to accomplish any of the following goals - boost membership, recruit and train volunteers, host events, fulfill member service requests, expand community support, or build infrastructure. The funds can be used to help our village become financially self-sustaining.
In addition to receiving support from the hub, NE Village did some successful fundraising of its own in 2016. The Irvington Community Association gave us $1,100, which paid for local advertising and publicity to attract members and volunteers. And the Grant Park Neighborhood Association provided $500 to subsidize membership for low-income residents of Grant Park.

Village Movement Grows in Portland
|
Seven villages in the Portland/Vancouver area will each receive $3,680 in unrestricted funds from Villages NW.
Four are already operating.
Eastside Village launched first in October 2015,
followed in 2016 by NE Village, Viva Village in Beaverton, and Village Without Walls in Hillsboro and Forest Grove. Three more villages (in north Portland, southwest Portland and Vancouver) will open their doors in the next two years.
As of December 31, the four open villages
served by Villages NW had 198 members in 148 households, with more than 250 volunteers providing services or village support and 52 volunteers serving as drivers trained and certified by Ride Connection.
Of the four open villages in Portland,
NE Village leads the pack in terms of sheer numbers of members and volunteers.
As of January 23 we have 83 members, of whom 24 are full-service members and 59 are associate members. NE Village has 62 volunteers, of whom 5 are certified to offer rides. There are 6 more drivers almost done with certification.

Charter Membership is Still Open
|
Grants aren't the only means of supporting NE Village financially. Were you thinking of becoming a charter member, but got so busy during the holidays that you never signed up? If so, it's not too late.
The deadline for becoming a charter member has been extended to February 15, 2017. You become a charter member by making a $500 donation above and beyond your membership fees. Even if you are already a member, you can make this donation.

Did you know you can make regular donations to NE Village without it costing you a dime? If you shop regularly at Fred Meyer or Amazon.com, you can use their community rewards programs to make a small donation to NE Village each time you buy something. It's automatic and won't affect your rewards under the program.
To link your Fred Meyer rewards card to NE Village, you have to designate it as your beneficiary. To do this, go to
www.fredmeyer.com/commuityrewards, scroll down and click "Re-enroll or link your Rewards Card now." Enter your email address, password and Zip code, then click "Create an Account." Enter the number on the back of your Fred Meyer rewards card, which will take you to the Community Rewards page. Enter the number for NE Village, which is

then click "search" and "enroll." NE Village will receive a check from Fred Meyer every quarter.
You can do the same thing with Amazon so the village gets a small benefit every time you shop online.
Amazon Smile supports local nonprofits in much the same way Fred Meyer does, at no cost to you. Shop
smile.amazon.com which has exactly the same offerings, low prices and convenience as
amazon.com, and Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to NE Village as your designated beneficiary.

NE Village Adopts Event Cancellation Policy
|
The relentless onslaught of winter weather led the NE Village governing council to adopt a policy recently for canceling scheduled Village services and events, as well as closing the office.
We will follow Portland Public Schools' lead in weather closures.
Any events or services canceled will be rescheduled as soon as feasible when the weather clears.

Your Library Card Comes with Hidden Perks

Did you know that as a resident of Multnomah County,
your library card can be used for free admission to the Portland Art Museum, the Northwest Film Center and Literary Arts events?
To access these perks online, use your library card to sign up for a My Discovery Pass account.
From the library's main web page,
type "My Discovery Pass" into the search box. On the left side under "Books, music, movies and more,"
click "My Discovery Pass," then use the link on the right to access the website.
Log into the site using your library card number and password. The calendar can be used to review free passes available on a particular day. As of this writing, passes to the NW Film Center and Portland Art Museum are available on most days except Mondays and Fridays in February.
Multnomah County residents are also eligible to use the library systems in Washington and Clackamas counties, which have similar perks of their own such as passes to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in Hillsboro and the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City.
