The Police Department wants to warn residents of a new identity theft scam that is occurring in our area involving unemployment benefits. Scammers are using stolen identity information to apply for unemployment benefits with your name and information on the cards. This is leading some people to receive legitimate debit cards in the mail when they never applied for unemployment benefits.

If you have not applied for unemployment benefits and receive a debit card quickly take the following steps since your personal information is already at risk:

1) contact the bank that issued the debit card;
2) contact your bank to update your security settings: and
3) report the fraudulent claim on-line at or call 1-800-814-0513.
