RECREATION DEPARTMENT STAFF NEWS
CONGRATULATIONS

On Wednesday, April 12th, Maura Haberman was elected President of the Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce.  Maura has served on the Chamber's Board of Directors for three years. Maura is co-chair of the Chamber's Marketing Committee and Nomination Committee.  She also is a member of the Scholarship and Awards Committee.  The Acton Recreation Department has been a proud member of the Middlesex West Chamber for 5 years and proudly supports our local business community.

The Acton Recreation Department was awarded a Grant from the Acton-Boxborough Cultural Council last Friday night, April 7th for this coming summer's Chinese Music and Dance Night scheduled for Thursday evening, August 24.  We would like to extend our gratitude to the Acton-Boxborough Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council for their support!
NOMINATE ACTON TO WIN $20K DURING “MEET ME AT THE PARK”
Town with the most nominations wins a grant for a local park through park improvement campaign.

This Earth Month, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is collaborating with The Walt Disney Company, including Disney Citizenship, Disney/ABC Television Group and ESPN, to revitalize parks across the U.S. for a third year.
The city that receives the most nominations will receive a $20,000 grant to improve a local park.   Local parks make Acton a better place to live and shape so many of our lives.  Parks are essential to our city’s health and well-being.  They provide safe places to be active and enjoy nature—and they help preserve the environment and bring people together.  That’s why from April 1 to April 30 residents will have the opportunity to nominate our town to receive $20,000 in grant funding to make improvements to a local park.   By visiting NRPA.org/BeInspired, park supporters can nominate Acton.

At the end of April, the city with the most nominations will receive the grant funding.  New this year, everyone who nominates a town will be entered into a drawing for a tablet outfitted for the outdoors.  During April, a public service announcement (PSA) supporting the Meet Me at the Park campaign will be shared with audiences across Disney, including ABC Television Network, ABC-owned and affiliate stations, Freeform, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, the ABC app and other digital platforms. The PSA will also be available to view on the voting site at www.nrpa.org/beinspired.  Additionally, Radio Disney will support the campaign with on-air radio spot.

This Earth Month, Acton can show what parks mean to our community by nominating our great town.  Please encourage your friends to nominate our town by taking a selfie in your favorite park and using the hashtags #MeetMeAtThePark, #Parkies, and #BeInspired.

For more information and to nominate Acton, visit NRPA.org/BeInspired or contact the Acton Recreation Department, [email protected]

PATRIOTS DAY AT THE FAULKNER HOMESTEAD
  MONDAY, APRIL 17,  FROM 1:00-4:00 P.M.
FAULKNER HOMESTEAD,  5 HIGH STREET, ACTON
Travel back in time to learn about why we celebrate Patriots Day in Acton as the start of both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.  Re-enactors from two different centuries will take part in the Iron Work Farm’s tenth annual Patriots Day Spirit.  Click here to view a video from the 2013 Skirmish in the Woods from ActonTV library.
This year, we invite neighbors and friends to a living history of South Acton village on that fateful April day in 1775.  The fore-yard of the Faulkner Homestead will be filled with Colonial families awaiting news of their militia men, as visitors experience 18th-century home life with demonstrations of textiles, cooking and animal husbandry.  The hillside behind the house will be the setting for the 1860s, where our Civil War troops, both Yankees and Rebels, will be encamped, welcoming guests to engage with soldiers and camp followers alike. We anticipate a woodland skirmish or two between Union and Rebel troops in the mid-afternoon.  Patriots Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—Give What You Will.  Visit www.IronWorkFarm.org  for more details.  Parking is available nearby.

ROBBINS RIDE ~ SUNDAY , APRIL 16 !
Setting the stage for the holiday, on Sunday, April 16 at about 5:30 p.m. the Iron Work Farm will welcome the Acton Minutemen to the Faulkner Homestead as part of their annual “Robbins Ride.”  In this re-creation of the Alarm Riders from the Old North Church in Boston to South Acton, the Minutemen will parade, fire their muskets, and play fife and drum while awaiting Captain Faulkner’s call to his West Militia.
Visit:  www.actonminutemen.org for details.

We had three great answers and our winner was Rich G. from Acton.  We had great replies come back but Rich's answer was closet to the date.  His reply was "This photo looks like the construction of NARA Park's lake back in like 1999".  Congratulations Rich.
