A Night of Serious Research at Privateer Rum...

Our August 25 Development Committee meeting was held at the headquarters of Privateer Rum in Ipswich. Committee members had the serious job of selecting the perfect batch of Navy Strength rum that will be bottled and served at our upcoming Cocktails in the Colonies fundraiser.

Each cask is different, and we had four incredible options. In the end, we chose a smooth sipper with notes of vanilla bean, toffee, and nutmeg, flavors that develop naturally during the magic of cask aging.

We work hard, but we also have really, really good time!

A big thank you to the wonderful folks at Privateer Rum for an informative and fun meeting!

Shot, Bludgeoned, Drowned, and Stabbed:

Dr. Perkins, the Farm Boy, and the Tattooed Man

by Bethany Groff Dorau, Executive Director

Above: Little River from Floyd's Lane (now Hanover Street), the scene of a brutal attack in 1855.

"I decided I would see what I could find about this case, which required transcribing, genealogy, and poring over old maps, deeds, and wills. Afternoon turned to evening, evening to night. The phone rang. It was my husband, wondering if I was ever coming home. “I can’t talk right now,” I said. “I’m solving crimes!”

I did not solve this crime, and the conclusion of this case is deeply unsatisfying, as I will explain in a moment, but I did meet a young man I will never forget, and found quite a lot to both love and loathe in the Newburyport of the 1850’s."

The Worcester Salt Special

by Robin Ziegler, PARC volunteer

“The Worcester Salt Special departed from the Worcester Salt Company in Silver Springs, NY on January 6, 1897 to celebrate the election of William McKinley as the 25th president of the United States. William McKinley was a staunch industrialist. He organized this “largest single shipment of a manufactured commodity ever made”, to be launched remotely when he pushed an electric button from his home in Ohio.”

Something Is Always Cooking...

Tomato Toast

It's hot, you are busy and your garden is cranking out fresh tomatoes like there is no tomorrow. It's a perfect recipe for the simplest and most delicious breakfast, lunch or late afternoon snack. If your garden isn't cooperating, there are plenty of farmers markets around just bursting with the goodness of the season.

Hot tip: There's nothing like the classic tomato and mayo sandwich, but friend admits that she mixes mayo and cream cheese with dill, mint, and black pepper for her sandwiches!

Ingredients

A loaf of good crusty bread (Sourdough, Peasant French or a good Semolina)

A jar of your favorite mayonnaise (Vegenaise works great too)

Fresh slicing tomatoes

Sea Salt

Instructions

1. Wash, dry and slice tomatoes

2. Slice and toast bread

3. Slather toast with a layer of mayo

4. Arrange sliced tomatoes on toast

5. Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper to taste

Grab a napkin, go outside and find a cozy spot to relax. Enjoy the taste of summer!
